I don’t get these changes, my Strava looks the same as it always has.
For the ride I did yesterday the full list of segments is there, even the ones that I came 444th up and stuff. Just looked at a ride one of my mates did today and it’s the same story.

I don't think they've actually done it yet. Probably waiting to see how much of a backlash there is before changing their minds (and capturing a bunch of new subscribers in the process).

Ah ok, that DC Rainman guy had posted screenshots so I thought it was live. When I look at app updates there’s one from a day ago to v150.0.1 for Strava and the description says stuff about focusing on subscribing users.

I Second this RWGPS is a much better route planner, Komoot is super clunky and tries to be too clever.
I've been using RWGPS for years and will stick with it for planning.

Komoot are spending a lot of money getting people to promote them, but their route planning tool isn't really any good, definitely not as good as RWGPS. Also they publish shit like https://twitter.com/richardf/status/1259763510118137856

I don't think any route planner is totally infallible. RWGPS is pretty good, but it still took me down a footpath in Swanley that was bookended with enormous concrete blocks, and featured more burnt out cars and flytipping than I've ever seen in one place
That might just be what Swanley looks like normally though

No, obviously not. They have every right to want to make money. I was just saying that, when corporates admit to needing to make money, they usually really need to make money.
-
• #4909
They have.
My ride on May 17th was showing all the segments afterwards and from yesterday it was only showing 4 segments I'd got KOMs or PBs on.

With big platforms like this, changes will be rolled out to users in batches, not everyone at once.

I think it depends what you want, for as much control as possible rwgps is the way forward, for click and forget decent routing with high level customisation komoot seems decent.
I use rwgps. -

On my way back from doing Angliru, RWGPS decided that this would be a nice route to take. That's with the 'avoid unpaved roads' box ticked. You can't really tell from the photo, but it was about a 25% gradient.

Yeah, not sure you can blame rwgps for the shiteness of Swanley public paths.
Most of them are like that, it's part of the "charm" of the area.

Looks like a few Sustrans routes I've tried following.

Yep I've been waiting for it to kick in. Looked last night and for the first time on the app it's now different. And really annoying if you do like segment competition, which I do!

Pay for it if you see value in it.

Not sure how Strava are lining up for a buyout. Who is going to buy a company which has failed to turn a profit for 11 years. Pass.
I have noticed a lot more of my non cycling friends / contacts joining tho as people focus on exercise tracking apps in lockdown.

Yeah, ride I uploaded last night was different. I too liked a bit of segment competition but I mainly liked seeing how my own performance was doing and that’s still there so not too fussed. Certainly not enough to pay for it.

I do get that and I may do, like a lot of people until now I haven't as there hasn't been a reason to...
-
• #4920
In all honesty I like seeing my own efforts and setting PBs, but I do like seeing the comparisons against my friends on there too... I obviously ignore the ones where they're faster than me and just focus on the ones where I'm faster :)

Got the new route planner update on strava today, looks much much better.

Who is going to buy a company
Depends what they can get it for and if they have other (better) ways to monetize everyone's data.
-
• #4923
I have now subscribed, at least on the free trial - new routing does look really good, very useful having the heatmap popularity element to keep on track when routing remotely.

Right now... fuck all !

Training Log disappearing to paid is rather annoying. I liked that feature and used it a bit.
Guess this is just going to act as extra encouragement to get off my lazy arse and work on my own bespoke site to do all of the analysis I want (and does better analysis of swimming and power data from cycling).
Komoot has likely been a wake-up call to them here, a bit of a lesson in how to leverage the community to make the tools better
