  • Prob need to double check you have Enhanced Privacy mode on

  • no, a surge on facebook though, and last month a lot of those on instagram. I don't have 'ask to follow' switched on

  • Strava is dead.

  • Strava is dead.

    long live strava!

  • If one was to buy a large piece of land, then put a big fence around it, would Strava segments within it be flagged?

I'm just asking for a friend.

  • I'm not that impressed with the Facebookification that's happening, but assuming the basic functionality remains, I guess I will stick with it

  • Remind me last time when a change in an app was adapted and accepted widely? Everyone will moan about it. Everyone will keep using it and there would be another version and repeat.

Given how Strava works I am sure it was designed to hit investor KPIs and rigorously user tested.

  • Stories/videos on instagram?

  • Stories on Snapchat?

    Fixed it for you.

  • have you seen the uptake?! People are posting less 'posts' and more stories these days!

  • a change in an app was adapted and accepted widely

Regardless, changes to strava aren't going in the right direction, I don't think they're as dominant as instagram and would be a lot more vulnerable to a good competitor.
I guess as soon as the competitor got big enough, there would be drive to properly monetise and the cycle would start again. I just wish my premium membership was enough to keep the $$$ ploys away.

  • Competitor like Garmin connect? 😂

  • What are the downsides of RWGPS? That's where I'm thinking of going.

  • Garmin Connect is actually a lot better than Strava in my opinion, just that not everyone’s on it

  • The heretical question to ask is what do we actually use it for? Record a ride for 'posterity'? Training? If so, how many people do we know who are training for something specific and can actually get something useful out of its metrics? Most people record commutes and if we're being honest with ourselves that is completely pointless.

My guess is that it's just like any other social media app, in that it is mildly interesting but mostly people just check it like they check any number of other social media things. The new UI nearly strips out the last of its real life applications and gives it that wonderful look and feel of every other dissassociative and mildly depressing social media platform.

  • Recording commutes does a few things for me, I replace the chain and cassette on time, I know exactly how many miles I can claim at 20p per mile and chainattacking Q1 segments.

  • Belt drive commuter with a vdo?

  • I'd rather drive

  • Why’s recording commmutes pointless. I want to know how many miles I’ve covered on a bike at the end of the year, my 35 mile daily round trip to work is part of that.

  • that wonderful look and feel of every other dissassociative and mildly depressing social media platform

    rep indeed

I would gladly pay a couple of € a month to have a chronological feed comprised of only rides and no other bs

  • Has total yearly mileage always been important to you, or is that now you can easily track total yearly mileage it's become important? Even if it's the former: 35 x 5 x 48, done. Is it so important to know your mileage within a 10% confidence margin?

I just mean to say (at least to myself) is that simply because we have the ability to measure different thing via strava / sm apps doesn't make them worthwhile. The most pernicious aspect being that it morphs our ability to be introspective, altering our 'why do I do this' to 'I wonder how I appear'. Which is of course obvious - but when it rears its head in an app supposedly based on life activities and not digital thoughts it should give us serious pause.

  • I agree. There’s more and better information in a nice front end.

And before being able to capture rides and record them electronically a lot of riders kept ride diaries to know what they had done during the year so I’m not sure how different strava, Garmin Connect et al from a notebook at a basic level and you get the chance to compare/contrast with other riders. Most KOM’s are out of my reach now so I’m just interested in how I am going on each segment compared to previous rides.
