Where did you keep the phone? Could that banana in your back pocket with it have interfered with it locating satellites? :)
IME as the Strava app has been updated it works less well (or not at all) on older model phones.

It was in the back pocket of my outer jersey, nothing else in pockets. Had a Camelback on but I don't think it would get in the way.
It's a Galaxy S so probably a bit old for it. I'll go for a non valley ride next week and see what happens.

It used to be fine in the chest pocket of my gillet, so I guess it's not locking onto as many satellites as spannermonkey's when you're at the bottom of the valley.
If you run the gps-test app by Chartcross you can see how many satellites it's seeing before you start recording.

just out of interest, how many satellites would that "typically" be?
-
• #1931
Minimum 3, highest I think I've seen on my SGS3 was 9, which helps when you move behind obstructions.

There isn't really a "typical" number of available satellites. It depends on the time of day and where you are (which determines which satellites are actually above you at the time), and what the weather conditions / immediate environment is like (which determines how many of the available sats your device is realistically able to see).
As Emyr says, you need at least three for a triangulation lock.

I understand how it works, at least in principle... Was merely wondering, as my only point of reference is military GPS equipment, which needless to say will pick up more satellites.

Someone just stole my Dammit's Driveway KOM by 1 second and I'm not fit enough to get it back. Fucksticks :(
-
• #1935
I should really have a go at that, but I can never be bothered to kill myself just before getting off the bike.
-
• #1936
Ha, is that the name of the segment?
-

A slow and painful harp hilly hundred today. Great route

I should really have a go at that, but I can never be bothered to kill myself just before getting on the bike in my house.
Surely this.

• #1940
Doing the segment before getting on the bike=you are suggesting I use a hobby horse?

If you're an old git you can compare yourself to other old gits. I did this when they were still giving away freebies.
Except that it turns out that the old gits are faster than the average of all users, so this may not be something you want to do.

This makes me in no way happy. No way at all. -

Hah, you're 42 seconds faster than me up there.

Big ring.

If anyone has a minute to spare, any chance you could fill out a quick survey for me, looking at the ways we track our sporting activity.
Thanks!
-
• #1947
"We are sorry,
You have already participated in this survey"I don't remember doing this at all.
-
• #1948
Ha! Think it takes under a minute to do, pretty easy to forget. Also did initially post it a month ago, and, like an idiot, completely forgot to put it here, where people on the forum come to talk about tracking activity...
Got some interesting results so far, apparently the majority of people find it completely unimportant to compare their results to others, so the whole premise of strava is bullshit!

Or the majority of people are lying.

I'm lying
Tried using Strava for the first time the other day. Went out with my brother on the mtb, both of us using strava, his ride was recorded fine. My ride was recorded strangely. it started me in the middle of a field which is around halfway through the ride. Although the ride skirted the field...
Could that be down to the old phone struggling in the valley perhaps?
Here are the two rides - http://app.strava.com/activities/42467305 and http://app.strava.com/activities/42467257
