    not

  • when they show the power statistics of your ride but you don't actually have a power meter than how
    realistic is it?

  • It's an approximation. It's only going to be close if resistance from air/road are totally benign.

  • This Rapha challenge, anyone doing it? I can't see that there are enough hills around in London.

Just got the calculator out, and you're looking at 2,850ft a day. Not easy to find in London, that...

  • when they show the power statistics of your ride but you don't actually have a power meter than how
    realistic is it?

It's an approximation. It's only going to be close if resistance from air/road are totally benign.

If you look in their FAQ / How stuff is calculated thingy, they claim that its usually less than 5% out compared to readings from power meters.
I'd hazard a guess that they will have used the same rider(s), and bike(s) for their tests, and entered exact weights for both each time... You'd hope so anyway for a claim like that.

  • There is no calculation for wind resistance built in Rowhan. So if you ride within a group your figures will be distorted. Likewise if you ride with a tailwind, a headwind or behind someone.

I emailed Support after I 1st signed up to Strava to get them to take down a ridiculous 5mins power figure (500 watts or something) that came about from a training ride I did with 30 other riders including Sharon Laws and some very fast people. Obviously it wasn't me putting out the power!

  • I don't believe it. Its shows peaks of over 900w on my commute and I was taking it fairly easy.

  • I don't believe it.

That is because it isn't true.

    ;-)

  • its all so random. Today i won some KOM on a small hill and in the stats its says 390W for me but 508W
for the one in second place.

  • Guy in second place will be heavier than you then.

  • w/kg required to get up something, innit. More watts per kg = more awesome. have a read of this.

Tom’s second lap KOM was 335 watts, and only about 1 second faster than my KOM on lap 1. 382 / 335 = 1.14. Look at that. The 14% difference in wattage matches our difference in weight. So I needed 47 more watts than Tom on this climb to keep pace.

  • ok, makes sense.

  • Making a segment: I would like to create a segment called "10 mile test" which is laps of Herne Hill from the start/finish line until one passes the 10 mile mark.

Is there an easy way of doing this, rather than highlighting 10 miles of a previous ride, which is the only way I can see of doing it?

  • My estimated power is pathetic by comparison to everyone else on Strava but who else weighs less than 60kg??

  • I weigh 62 :)

  • I recieved my water bottle.

someone told me that they would get a bike for achieving the challenge, they were adamant about this, i was not convinced.

  • I've not recieved a bike yet, just this water bottle and a novelty newspaper windbreaker. I'll tell you when my bike arrives, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

  • If you use the bike description thing it's quite handy as a way to track mileage for parts- I just "retired" a chain with 2,236 miles on it.

I'll keep a better watch on the new one, as the old one was beyond knackered when it went in the bin.

  • ^ yeah it's good that for cables, chains and tyres. Just have to remember to update it...

  • Anyone getting involved with Rapha Rising today?

  • Anyone use software to combine a garmin .fit with a hrm file before uploading?

  • I use topofusion to do something similar:

    • Output SRM file (filename.srm)
    • Open in Golden Cheetah
    • Export ride data as CSV (filename.csv)
    • Open the Garmin ride file (ride.tcx) in Topofusion
    • Using the Power Analysis tab "add" the CSV to the file
    • Save the new file as a TCX (newfile.tcx)

You should then have a file with everything from the Garmin and the SRM.

  • ah I don't have windows pc.
