Dumb Ass Bike Questions

  • I couldn't bring myself to buy those tensile hubs because then my Campy peanut butter spanner would be neglected. They do look nice though. I am getting way too much advice and help here haha. I can't make my mind up now. I have formula hubs at the moment and was looking to upgrade, hence the aprehension to buy more formula but if the next step up is something like the dura ace, is the money worth the gain?

  • what gain? they're both just a shell, axle and some bearings. You could spend the money on some CX rays and alloy nipples. that would make much more difference. or go crazy and get both!

the one with goldtec hubs are pretty nice, although you'd need to change the axle, which are £30. vintage campy hubbed wheelset is cool, they belong on a classic bike though.

  • are the cx rays the bladed spokes? When I said gain I meant the quality of the hub and smooth bearings? I'm no expert so I just thought they must be better due to the price tag... Rookie mistake?

CX Rays are really lightweight and aero spokes. the best steel spokes there are, just £3 each. Rose Cycles has DT Revo's really cheap, like 45p each, im not sure how, since everywhere else is twice that. they are really thin butted spokes 1.5 centre thickness, but on 32h they should be plenty stiff enough.

I know what you meant. They sure are better quality, but not much so in the way of function, the bearings are just bearings, they literally cost pennies. You can get ceramic bearings for £20-30 each. "Round to within 10 millionths and twice as round as top of the line Dura Ace". I doubt you can work out any real world difference, but they sure sound good.

Just grab some open pros or similar solid build rim, on one hubs and double butted spokes. - adds upto £145. You'd spend this much alone on dura ace hubs, CX rays or ceramic bearings.

  • Then get me to build them for you.

  • Drew can vouch for him, ha!

  • Where are we getting our bikes sprayed at the moment chaps? I remember that there is somewhere highly recommended around our way, but fucked if I can remember.

I need more matte blackness in my life.

  • Chan's done a couple at chicago in Ashton I think, I need to do the polo bike black too.

  • That's the one. Want to send both off? From what I remember it's about £20 a pop?

Depends on turn around, also. I can't be waiting more than a few days...

  • they're ok. I took a pomp in to be stripped and clearcoated and its not the best job. Only 15 quid though...

  • Bargain, need to do my fork as well and can't leave it too long between dropping off and picking up either, or I'll get polo withdrawal, probably best for me to do on a Monday.

I could get in with that...

  • Cool, were you going to bike down with another bike on you, think I'll strap the polo bike to the road bike? Dawg.

  • Anyone know where in Manc I can get extra threaded fork length added and approx how much it costs?

  • Do you mean extra threading length or extra steerer length?

If the former there should be a few bike shops that do it but have no idea on cost.
and the latter is just too much hassle to bother with.

  • Has North Manchester Powder Coatings moved or gone out of business? The number listed on the web isn't working... (ending 6806)

They moved last year to Royton and I think are now called Royton Powdercoatings.

    Royton is fecking miles awy.

  • Brilliant - cheers!

  • wanted to use my corime 4 spoke front wheel this coming week however its now seems un-true.. and i dont really know why as it hasnt been punished....

is there any reason more specific to carbon as to why it can un-true? (only asking as i am a bit dumbfounded as to how it became this way)

and is there a way i can get it re-trued?

    ta!

  • Can't really re-true carbon spoked wheels like that. Is the tub off centre. Failing that if you are using a brake just open it up a bit.

Sometimes if they go out of true they can be damaged. Carbon can be prone to impact damage a lot more than metal, as it is so brittle and doesn't give.

What are you using it for? Racing, track?

  • as it is so brittle and doesn't give.

This would be why fishing rods and tent poles get made of it. I used to use Carbon paddles canoeing back in the 90's and used to bend them something stupid, same with my kevlar carbon boat. Carbon does bend, carbon rims can be trued.

  • not if they have carbon spokes. and if they are damaged no one will repair them as it is too risky.

and it is all about lay-up and resin. which is why a fishing rod flexes and a bike wheel doesn't

  • well i had it momentarily on my about town run around (but i am talking the lovely streets of Palma not potholed LDN) for a short amount of time and this was literally for very easy going short rides to the supermarket...

any way it is now slightly out.

i will try it on the track tmr and see how it feels..

  • if it is a slight left/right wobble and not a "roundness" issue then i'd just ride it. other than that you could send corima an email, though you might have to do it in french - not sure about their customer services.

  • is that palma mallorca BTW?
