Since I got the new modem mine has not dropped below 19.9.
Virgin recommend you use speedtest.net because they own it..Can they fix a speed test in their favour?
-
• #129
they can allow unthrottled access to it, and throttle you else where
-
• #130
What?!?!?
When I gave Virgin a dossier of speedtest.net results and asked for a significant refund (paying for 60MB was getting less then 4MB) I was told that they did not recogise speed test as a reliable measure!Fuckers.
My connection has been down since 9:30 this morning.
The tour starts in 30mins FFS! -

No Internet since this morning. Anyone else? Brixton/HH border. happened shortly and passed yesterday.

The Web status thing says tv and phone has issues but broadband is fine...
-
• #133
We've had issues in Dalston for the last coupla weeks. Super slow, not at all, etc. Restarting the router seems to solve it most of the time though.

Those on virgin who the price is going up for (everyone?) and on contract: call them, say you want to cancel your contract early because of the price rise (this is an option in fine print on the back of the letter they sent out to everyone) and they'll offer you the old price (or maybe better if you try?). I just used the convenient timing to get out of a contract before moving to a new flat that doesn't have cable (and I don't see any reason to have Virgin unless you're getting their super sweet fast cable internetz).
Oh, and have a free phone number: 01256 752 000

^great tip thanks. virgin are crap can barely watch netflix here
-
• #136
Get a vpn, our speed doubles or triples through it, no traffic management either
-
• #137
really, i thought it would slow it down. what one do you use?
-
• #138
mainly to take me to sweden, but it's good for speed as well
-
• #139
Sandy of virgin media broadband support told me that there is a major problem with the service in north London that will be fixed by 9pm today.
So now no internet or TV.
Peaceful

Fuck virgin. For the last three days we've had half a day of internet access. No fucking warning, no explanation and no sorry.
-
• #141
Snap, it's been shite all weekend, dreadfully slow/unavailable.
-
• #142
^ ^^
Use their Facebook page; it was the only thing that got their attention when I had problems. Their direct e-mail is Twitter@ virginmedia.co.uk.
-
• #143
Patchy internet all weekend, useless. Checking speeds at broadbandspeekchecker always worked though and gave solid results, what a coincidence.
-
• #144
they are appalling, once this contract is up never again. Branson and Bolt can both do one..
-
• #145
Mine is still playing up, more or less non existent since my post above ^^^^^
Been paying for the fucking pricey BT Fon in the meantime. Virgin did say they would reimburse me, which I guess is the least they could do.I don't have facebook, nightmare bullshit call centres with people reading off a script is all I've gotten through to. They're sending round an engineer on Wednesday but I don't see how that's gonna help when it's a widespread problem.

I'm SE14, are you all SE as well?
-
• #147
nope i am N1. I've had numerous engineers out over the past year and its good for a while then back to square one. If you email the CEO's office you do get fast tracked though. The email address is knocking around in another virgin thread on here somewhere. I've had enough of them tbh
-
• #148
@sorethroat when my Virgin broke spectacularly I used a Three PAYG dongle, is that an option? Much cheaper...
I don't know how you all stick with them to be honest.

I'm N1 with Virgin too, the weekends are pretty much a write off. But I'm almost certain it's just because they're throttling the shit out of us rather than someone going bad with the lines. It's way too consistent to be any kind of technical fault, and it will work perfectly for the odd second as they let some packets slip through. I'm rather sick of it to be honest, but I know that BT or anything won't be any better. I have a feeling if we change to fibre optic they might stop throttling us but that's just being hopeful.

yep i think its throttling too. I think I am on fibre optic and its not much better. There is some talk up thread about VPN's but I am not sure if they make a difference. Other companies are defintely better, I have friends with Sky and their internet is great.
Different speed test sites give me vastly different results.
Speedtest.net - 10.6
BT Wholesale Broadband - 31.1
BBC Iplayer - 20.2
I shall choose to conclude nothing from this exercise.
