re the bb. There was a lot, like 3 or 4mm, of thread showing when it was fitted
can these bbs be lockringed on the extra thread? i'm having nothing but trouble with mine loosening. i tighten the non drive cup, it reaches a point then pops and goes loose. I think this also happens when riding.
I've fit a lockring but i don't know if it's an inherently bad idea.

A lockring will fit but not really do anything, I don't think. Apart from look neater. (Must admit I did that on an old bike when I replaced the cup & cone BB with a cartridge job.)
The best way to fit a BB is with a torque wrench like the Park beam-type one, and just torque it correctly from the start. If it's popping when you force it tighter, I'd be worried that the threads were damaged. You might have over-tightened it.

that sounds like it's threaded.

For some reason with this combination of crank and BB I get 144mm chain line. I'm after 142mm. Can't work out why this is happening, I've measured and measured again. Any ideas?
Thank you guys, all this has been extremely helpful, not to mention very educational for me. Cheers.
I think I'll go for the 110mm just in case and space out the cog.
