edit- There are 1600 pandas currently in the wild, which is a fragile situation since they on average reproduce at a rate of slightly less than one. The chinese economy unfortunately is more important than the protection of this habitat, which is gradually being encroached on. Effectively the chinese are destroying the wild panda but making a show of protecting it by captive breeding.
Yes, I would have thought that the panda's problems are basically because of habitat destruction, to which they were quite well adapted. I completely agree that destroying habitats and then captive breeding is wrong.
