the worst thing about it is that the curve on the underside of the saddle doesn't even match the curve of the top tube (?) properly, poor effort

I know what was fundamentally wrong with that build: It needed black components and especially deep black rims (to work with the fat alu tubes). Then it would'a looked fucking ream.
The current GT looks much better.Do you mean your current GT? Is it the Ti road frame? Send me a snap of that plz if you have one.

I'm not sure about KHS either - they made excellent value for money skinny steel mtb's in the early 90's (TIG welded true temper cro-mo frames) I've not seen much from them over here since
