I have been running a single half link for similar time too with no issues. As long as it is joined correctly it should be no different to any of the other links.
-
• #21003
I think people were referring to the master link?!
-
• #21004
both are fine...
-
• #21005
Quick/master/split/joining links are infinitely better than a poorly joined standard link.
And by poorly I mean not joined and then had the rivet peened with a peening tool. Which lets face it, nobody does.

Wtf is a peening tool :')
I imagine I've been doing some gross disservice to my chains all this time, and I'm not even sure what yet
-
• #21007
gun metal zen is awesome though
-
• #21008
I thought you only need a peening tool for those campag chains. Or shimano with the replacement pins. I haven't noticed other chains having the little peening lip. Is there and I haven't noticed it?
-
• #21009
So far as I'm aware* all chain rivets are peened.
When you push the rivet out it removes the peened lip.
Even if they aren't peened then they work entirely by being an interference fit. The act of pushing the rivet in and out must lessen that interference fit and make it more liable to failure.
*Awaits Tester telling me I'm wrong.

I think I've invented the peening tool.
A quick google suggest the Campag one is the only one.
Still, I prefer split links.

Park-tools make one

• #21012
That's just for Campag.
Sorry, that was what I meant when I said Campag one.

the new odyssey chain is held together with hex bolts. I'm not sure id trust it over a peened or un-peened rivet but its a nice idea.
-
• #21016
I've ridden for over a year with my current chain which has a snaplink in it, I think there is only a problem if you get a shit chain. One I had before also had a snaplink and was fine for over 6 months.

It's possible but you never know when it could go, I remove mine for peace of mind.
In an ideal world they should be just as strong but as they're more complex than a normal link there are more things that could happen. -
• #21018
I would like to try that oddyssey thing out, looks like an interesting idea.

Threads seem a weak point but I'd give it a go.

Eliminates the need to carry anything other than a multitool.
-
• #21021
Well, I carry this along with a spare link anyway:
