  • I think it is. How do the stays differ? Look same to me

I was wrong, I've seen some Mash's with more square seat and chain stays than that.

  • Probs a repost but defo worth IMO.

  • Ah indra, thats one of my faves, shame the pic is HUGE, it takes forever to load.

  • Sorry, but it's worth waiting for!

  • dont get the look keo easys, not great tension even at max. Found them terrible for track riding so would be even worse for skidding

Keo Easy don't have adjustable spring tension.

Noted, deffo avoid them then. Shame as PX have 'em well cheap atm

  • Shimano 105 SPD-SL are quite good... What's your top budget?

5700? Probably pull the trigger on those as they're £35 on CRC atm.

  • B0N0R
If you can find some SPD-R's then go go go!

  • R. pedals, for skidding I can't help but think that straps > clipless.

A clipless pedal can certainly give enough retention force for skidding but the more you dial the tension up the harder releasing becomes even when you're doing it intentionally. Not a problem at the track where you can stop at the barrier, get your coach to grab you but not so great when you need to stop at lights, junctions etc.

A strap gives good retention in the direction required for skidding - pulling up - while still allowing easy entry/exit from the pedal too - backwards.

There are only two clip-less pedal choices to use when riding fixed on the road in my opinion.

Time Atac for short distances and with MTB walking friendly shoes or Look Keo's for long distance.

Atac's are very secure and have lots of adjustable float, you clip out 95% less with Atac pedals than if you are using Shimano spd's or eggbeaters for example.

Keo's need the black coloured road cleats for maximum unclipping security. I found the Grey cleats with a couple of degrees float clip out when riding at speed down mountains, when you need to brake by skidding... (not fun when you have a one sided pedal and carbon soles that you don't really want to footjam in the back so you can slow down.) With the black cleats I have had no such trouble.

Also when using both of these pedals when stopping at the lights and putting your foot down, you just need to be definite in doing so. Hesitation is the only cause of un-clipping accidents in my experience!!!

  • "Shimano 105 SPD-SL are quite good... What's your top budget?"

"5700? Probably pull the trigger on those as they're £35 on CRC atm."

Yes mate. In my opinion best "value for money" pedals out there at the moment.

Tried them out for a few rides on and off road before fitting them on girl's bike. In terms of performance and power transfer, the difference between 105 and Dura Ace is pretty much placebo if I'm perfectly honest; you certainly won't experience any difference for a HHSB build except the price tag of course.

  • Secure pedals are more important on a HHSB bike than on any other. (HHSB meaning, a brakeless fixed gear bike that is ridden in traffic in cities at speed)

Apparently this is considered the most dangerous form of bicycle riding by most... even though there are brakeless BMX's in these cities too. The BMX is understood and this is why it's not considered as dangerous. I over heard this at the bike show yesterday during the Fixed Crit...

  • You're not gonna find a more secure pedal setup than Shimano SPD-SL... Lack of hipster foot-ware to go with them is the only issue.

  • ^ Shimano Rep...

Hipster and Hip Hop Slave Bikes are not related...

  • Bwat!?

  • "Hipster and Hip Hop Slave Bikes are not related..."

Please share your wisdom kind Sir. I'm old and don't really understand the difference.

Hipster's dont ride HHSB, they ride create's or foffa's. Hipsters don't spend more money than they have too on Fixed gear bikes.

The Giro Empire shoe would be about the closest there is to a "Hipster style" road bike shoe. Are Chrome SPD shoes hipster?!

I'm probably older than you, maybe!

-Disclaimer- I'm not say there is anything wrong with being a Hipster or owning a crate/foffa bike just that they are not what this thread (The HHSB Thread) is about. -end-

  • To jump on the discussion upthread - I've got a pair of Silver 105 SPD-SLs knocking around in my parts box, you can have them for £25. I used them fixed for about 4-5 months and only had a single unexpected unclipping, and that was me twisting my feet in pure 'why did that bus stop dead when I'm doing 30+ downhill' panic

  • ^^Epic win!

Actually I would have characterised my MASH Bolt as hipster to the bone; something I've had a very hard time coming to terms with.

  • I always thought hipsters were style over function and not HHSB. For starters if it hasn't got bar tape then it shouldn't be here imo.

  • Hipster Hobo Style Bike thread >>>>>>

  • I've used SPD-SL and Look Keo's on the street and track, and i would definitely choose SDL-SL over the Keo's anyday, partially because SPD-SL's are a bit more friendly to walk in
