  • The CX Ray were almost 3 times the price ... the advice I got was:

The Sapim Race spokes are still a butted spoke and are at least as good as say a DT Competition spoke. The Laser is made of a higher quality steel, it is quite a bit lighter and has a higher longevity. The CX-Ray is pretty much the best spoke money can buy. They come on lots of high end road wheels now (some Zipps for example). They are aerodynamic, their longevity rating is unparalleled and their strength is extremely high - they can be used for downhill racing for example. However their premium price tag is a deterrent for some people. You may also want to consider the Sils alloy nipples upgrade.

I figured that the wheelset would be fine with Lasers, given that I wouldn't be racing let alone downhill racing. I have taken the nipple upgrade.

When doing things like this I always think fuck it and go for the best, so I would have gone CX Ray. Having said that all my wheels are low spoke count, so the cost difference is not negligible but isn't so great it scares the Bank Manager.

  • I'm not pushing the bike anywhere near you would be though, so it's diminishing returns for me - I could fork out the extra, but would I appreciate the difference? Other than VB's comment re: stiffness and probably preferring less of it.

I figured, certainly with rotating parts (hence Royce hubs and BB, and CK headset), the difference is discernable.

  • I'm not pushing the bike anywhere near you would be though...

    Are you sure about this?

  • I believe that's a reference to "push" as in performance, not "push" as in 'Slaining

  • Back in your box Jason!

  • The Painter just called, on a Saturday too! He's done most of the frame and was working on the alternate colour (green) I'd chosen for some small details, he reckoned it was not the way to go. Apparently the main colour on the tubing looks pretty amazing, but was being spoilt by the green details.

Props for him making the call - to run it by me so he could get the green off before it set. The personal interest and care he is showing in the colour selection is really impressive.

  • Why go for Sapim Laser and not CX Ray?

Laser make the wheel 'look' delicate, and will be fine with L&W on board.

  • Scheduled to go pick it up on Friday afternoon ... yay!

  • As everybody has said L&W, Wowsers!

  • Cant wait to see this built. Sounds amazing and more than a little bit nuts

  • Can't wait to see the paint job.

I guess we needn't ask for lots of photos.

  • Awesome ... the weather for the weekend is a photolicious ...

I'm getting rather concerned that I've gazumped myself with the higher gear inches, given that the only available rear sprocket (20t) bumps me up to 73.3 GI. I'm currently riding 68.3 GI (which was harder work this morning, given my sporadic riding over the past 4 months). I'll see what it's like this weekend.

In April, the 22tooth sprocket should be back in stock, which will take me back down to 66.7 GI. At least I know I have the option ahead of me.

  • Wow,
and there was me thinking my custom Paris was complecated... cant wait to see the finnished bike.

    Wooooh... sounds nice...

Think I may have seen this near the end of it being built - if it was made in 2010? Lots of lug extensions?

  • I can't wait to see this!!

  • Id love to witness Julia's expression as anytime now the complete creation is revealed at its shining best.
Just like the moment the blind Date screen is pulled back.

  • The fact that this thread had been posted in made me rush in to view the photos. You bastard.
