Yeah and Santander apparently.
How are First Direct with international debit card usage? Do you have to tell them you're going overseas or not?
-

You don't need a security dongle but you do now need a smartphone app for authenticating new transaction arrangements.
Like all banks you should tell them if your card activity is going to be significantly different from your normal profile eg: when going abroad if you don't often go to that country.
Still the most enjoyable banking experience there is.

Is that first direct? I thought they were just HSBC in a black dress.

They're the online version of HSBC but they seem to be far less, what's the word I'm looking for? Oh, SHIT, for normal operations.
Calling my bank to tell them I'm overseas is unacceptable. My card is in my possession. I live less than 2hrs away from Berlin by plane. Why should I tell them anything about my plans? I need a bank that's not shit. It's my money they're using, they shouldn't be restricting my access to it.

2nd Nationwide, this might be of help/use?

Is it easy to change an old Current Account to a new one at a new bank?
If yes, which bank:
- doesn't use any stupid fucking security dongle for online banking
- doesn't automatically deny international 'card present' transactions
cater allen sterling account, the premium brand of santander

The whole hsbc possible liquidity issues rumour (related to requiring evidence of use before withdrawing cash over £3k) prompting me to leave them.
cooperative Internet doesn't use a dingle, but tbh a dingle is better than an unexpected phone call to confirm details of a large same day payment you had no knowledge of (happened when I banked with a small .com bank)

I need to speak to HSBC about three fraudulent transactions on my account, but they seem to have sacked anyone who worked in a branch and I can't get through on the phone.

Needs £5k in the account or charges will be levied.
-
• #1013
and?
a pair of dinkies like you should be pouring 5k a week into it

I splurge it all on coke and whores.
And a mortgage.

Is there any real disadvantage to having your current account with your mortgage provider? I know people suggest not to so they can't have you over a barrel but I'm not too bothered about my state of finances for that to be an issue.
What does the hivemind think? -

Its a generic free service that doesn't force you carry a two factor authentication token with you.. acceptable enough to me.
Not sure what other free banking service doesn't use prejudices computer algorithms for fraud prevention.
When I was in berlin last april my card worked fine thanks..
Only time ive had in blocked when I was in the states and left the card in a machine.
Luckily got it back and just rang first direct to reactivate it.. no bother. -

The two-factor auth requires a working smartphone though, no? So, slightly better than the keyring option but still annoying. It doesn't have to be free banking either, just not banking that requires £5k in the account at all times to avoid charges.

What does the hivemind think?I do but I soon won't. It has not been a disadvantage to my knowledge.

Get a credit card that doesn't do you over on exchange rate or charges? Halifax and Post Office both do a straight currency conversion one with no fee. Don't know about getting cash out on them though

The truth is out: money is just an IOU, and the banks are rolling in it

It's astounding.
If true it's just a way of ensuring wealth gets shoveled over to the rich 1% from everyone else -

budget on now
how will they transfer money from the rich to the poor this time -
• #1024
What does it mean though? I don't have to pay my mortgage? Not bloody likely.

The article misrepresents the BOE paper a little, and also seems to get a few things wrong - the paper is pointing out that people misconceive what banks do, and how money supply works.
