  • That's because it's not an acronym, but an initialism...

  • Oh, and ... could we perhaps have a comma after 'language' in the new thread title? :)

  • Oh...I was only here to find out what the English language people was. I assumed it was a song.

  • 'Offun' instead of 'Often'.

This has been eating away at my soul.

  • I have changed the title.

  • A lesson in correct English use from hippy McShutup:

Speak louder than everyone else. Your English is now correct.

  • Same! Reading the acronym AS the acronym is horrible and weird because it's "hard" to pronounce - think it's the 3 hard consonants at the start. Feels like it takes longer to say "HTFU" than it does to say "harden the fuck up".

How do you pronounce that most contrary of acronymns, 'WWW'?

Struck by the absurdity of having an acronym that takes longer to say than its expanded form, but needing to disambiguate it from that form, I tend towards saying 'wuh wuh wuh'.

And what about pronouceable acronyms such as Fiat, laser and radar?

  • You don't. Because it's not a fucking acronym, other than by a lazy definition of acronym.

  • Just call it an LDA and be done with it!

  • LDA is my new TLA

  • How do you pronounce that most contrary of acronymns, 'WWW'?

Resentfully. I'll call it "the prefix" or "the domain prefix" if I can possibly get away with it.

Proper pronounceable ones are much better. I once made up a new technology called Slidar for a terrible short story I wrote in English class. It expanded to "super light detection and ranging", and I didn't trouble myself with the details of how the science was supposed to work.

  • I'd hate to be your parent's when you're explaining how to find stuff online..

    "prefix dot google dot com"

  • Wut?

  • That doesn't have nearly enough swearwords in it to be an acceptable analogue of me telling my mother how to find anything online. In any case Google works without the prefix as well as with, so I'd just leave it out.

I'm going to pretend I can't see that greengrocer's apostrophe as it's probably deliberate.

  • it isn't "'arden the fuck up", it is "harden the fuck up"...

    Doin it wrong

  • 'Offun' instead of 'Often'.

    You too...

  • Doing it wrong.
