  • Supposedly it was just a bad batch, as many of the BB30s have been trouble free (supposedly) we were just the unlucky ones. Get the shop you bought it from to cover costs of returning it to them for the work, or to have the work done at an LBS. I don't think that woyuld be an unreasonable request, and they should be able to pass the costs back to their supplier.

Yes I will do this, see if they can fling me a few free inner tubes or something to cover the cost

  • Is the verdict on these that they are quite shit then? How are they now mikec?

  • I covered mine in mud today, will see how they perform tomorrow.

  • My Gossamer crankset is creaking/clicking to buggery. Was going to swap the bottom bracket over for an Ultegra one given that the FSA ones seem unnecessarily expensive:

Anyone forsee any probs with using a Shimano external BB instead of an FSA one.

  • Just make sure you check spindle diameter/BB diameter compatability
    Not all are/were 24mm

  • My current FSA BB is Megaexo. Thats 24mm I think...

Issues is highly likely to be the BB30 bearing rather than the crankset, take it back to the shop and get them to check/replace the BB.

  • Cheers Ed. As I say, I was going to swap the bb over for an ultegra one as its half the price of the FSA bb. Just wondering if that might cause issues.

  • Might want to check how tight the non-drive side crank arm is too...

Had FSA Gossamer on my fuji and after about 2 weeks creaking and clicking noises, it worked itself completely loose. Might not be the case with yours but I've heard several similar stories particularly with Gossamer.

  • Rowhan, I managed to narrow it down to the Fuji being poorly pre-build before being put in the box that cause this.

And the shop not checking the BB before putting it in the shop floor too.

  • Cheers Rowhan. Weirdly the crank end cap on the non drive side (not sure of its actual name) keeps working its way loose. Crank arm is still on nice and tight though...

Exactly the same that happened to me... I just had no idea at the time what the cap coming loose meant. If your crank arm's actually been tightened enough you might not have the same problem I had. (crank arm came off on a fast downhill)

  • Mine was creaking a bit, LBS said the BB bearings were gone. It had done a fair distance though, probably more than 500 km.

I changed it a while ago. I'm trying to swap the cranks and BB over to a new frame but can't get the drive side crank off. Wasn't a problem last time, maybe I didn't grease it enough.

Pretty sure there's a ring holding it in place, but if there is I can't get it off. Also tried smacking it through with a rubber mallet. No dice.

    Any ideas?

    This happened to me too.

I still have the scar on my hip.

I heard a tinkling sound behind me and thought I'd dropped something. Stopped, couldn't see anything so carried on. Got out of the saddle for a hill and crashed down hard as the LH crank arm came off.

The direction of rotation works it loose. As it rubs your shoe it spins out quite quickly. Even if checked at the start of a ride it can be out by the end.

The fact that every website sells spare ones for a few pence tells me it happens a lot.

    I've loctited mine in now.
