  • Rasher or 2 or smoked bacon + Onion + Veg stock cube + Frozen peas = Super quick Pea & Ham Soup.....

Reckon investing in a decent-ish stick blender is worth the money, just make sure you get one with a metal stick part so you can blend hot soups without it melting like some cheap plastic ones do.....! This has happened to me!

  • Breville hand blenders. Pretty good.

  • I'll share some soups:

My Chicken Soup (Canja de Galinha)
(very cheap, very easy, very quick)

    • 1 chicken quarter
    • 1 chicken stock cube
    • 1 onion
    • 1 bay leaf
    • 2 tbl spoons Olive Oil
    • 1 cup of Risoni Pasta* (usual in any Turkish or Italian shop)
    • Salt
    • Fresh Mint to serve
    • 0.5L boiling water

    Method:

Chop the onion finely, put it to the water with oil, Salt, bay and stock cube.
Bring it to a boil then add the chicken, preferably cut into chunks.
Boil the chicken for about 15, 20min... doesn't have to be fully cooked, yet.
Take it out and tear it to bits, no bones but you can leave the skin.
The water in the pot should be very 'stocky', and reduced a bit, so if necessary
add a bit more. Pour in the pasta and the teared chicken, cook in medium heat
until the past is double the size and soft. Serve with fresh mint (and Chorizo if you
    eat pork).

If you don't like this recipe, I will pay your shopping... which should be about £4.

  • I used to have a Bamix hand blender, the ex got to keep it...
    #stillgutted

  • Fuck himher. Buy a kenwood masterchef.

  • Will do, sorta busy now.

  • Let's kill MaxC, and share the meat.

    Undibs, he'd taste of mustard;

  • He wish... he can't afford mustard.

  • Soup will make you feel fuller for longer, the liquid remains in your stomach for longer than solid food... I read that somewhere...

    Actually a TRUFACT.

Blended soups keep you fuller than chunky soups too.

  • I'm about to have soup.

I only deal in FACTS, Ru...

    Also about to have soup...

  • eating chicken and noodle soup at the moment - normally wouldn't eat chicken soup but It's from work and cost £1. Still would be cheaper if I made it at home though!

  • This is my problem with the Freegan thing, everytime i see photos of people hauls i think it seems to be a load of processed crap i wouldn't want to/probably shouldn't eat....

As a student I skipped pretty regularly, it became part of my schedule to go out cycling late at night visiting bins. Housemates must of thought I was crazy.

It's addictive but not particularly good for you. So many croissants and danish pastrys chucked out every day. I'd also end up with massive hauls of a single item: i remember finding 20+ packs of asparagus and having to take it home as it's so expensive and seemed such a waste. Pee stank for weeks.

Interesting to note it's completely socially acceptable in some other countries. I've visited Copenhagen and climbed into bins in daylight, with plenty of people around, no-one said anything. Much more fruit and vegetables there thanks to really bad best-before laws.

  • Leek & Chickpea soup:

2x Large leeks - thin medallions
    1x Potatoe - small chunks
2x tins of Chicpeas (about 400g if you're cooking your own)
    1x Stock cube
    Garlick

Soften the leeks and garlic for +/- 10 min, wit ha lid on to keep in all the juices. Meanwhile par-boil the potatoe. Then add the chickpeas, and the water from the tins, and the potatoes, and some of their cooking water, and the stock cube. Add loads of black pepper, and simmer for another 15 min, with the lid on.

    Blend half, and serve.

    Additional things to add:
1 x Parsnip - makes it lovely and sweet.
Spicy olive oil and Parmesan - makes it super nice, but more expensive

  • Does anyone have a recipe for lentil soup or what to have with it? I've had a tin in the cupboard and want to do something with them.

  • Lentils >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • no way

    daal ftw

  • Lentils are awesome... Today's soup nomz...

  • i lived on homemade hummus, bread and soup when i was unemployed. probably ate better than i do now!

  • Just cut through SOAS and the Hare Krishnas are giving out free food which they do pretty regularly.
