Nissan satnav owner here, can confirm.
Actually the car is a bit shit too, tbf.

Long term Garmin user here. Agreed. Still traumatised by having to use Basecamp.

One of my (former) colleagues came to us from Garmin, where he worked in their software team. He had some great stories.

fair point
:')

Did they actually try to make the software awful, or did they genuinely think they were doing a great job?

I do sometimes wonder about the decision-making processes at Garmin HQ. I can imagine the following discussion taking place:
"So, what colour are the roads going to be on the maps?"
"How about purple?"
"Purple? Love it! Purple it is. And what colour are we going to make the saved course shown on the maps. Obviously we want it to be easily distinguishable from other roads shown on the map."
"How about a very, very slightly lighter shade of purple?"
"Genius! Let's go with that. Presumably we'd allow users to change the default very-slightly-lighter-shade-of-purple colour?"
"Well, of course, the user is always right."
"And presumably that would apply universally to every course once the user had changed it?"
"Oh no, we'd make them change it for each course individually."
"Ah yes, stupid me, that's obviously better."I can think of no other explanation.

The usual problems; software was always secondary, the hardware specs were defined without any input from the software team, requirements were poorly defined and the time available was always less than needed.
He definitely didn't think he was doing a great job, he left because he found it so frustrating.

Can we setup a crowdfunder to hurt him?
Garmin software is fucking abysmal. Getting better but that's probably just me learning the quirks. Beta testing on user motherfuckers.

• #5685
Cruel, he is a very talented engineer and a good guy to boot.
-
• #5686
The pain they have caused millions needs to be paid for, in blood preferably. Bring him to his fate!
Did he actually work on the Edge devices?

This explains why zwift is expanding into hardware "Our software is shit, we might as well be a hardware company"

So I got GRX Shifters instead of ultegra as the consensus was that the shape was nicer.
I think the shape is good, but what I don't like, and didn't expect, is the ridges on the hood rubbers. I can see them being ideal for extra grip on day rides off road where you're wearing gloves, but my plan is to use them on ultra races where I mostly don't wear gloves and am a bit worried about them ripping my skin off after a few days.
Someone said that there are aftermarket replacements but I haven't been able find any non shimano ones. I'm going there might be smooth ones that would fit, anyone know of any?

I didn't like them to begin with, and they did rip my skin off. But few thousand hours on them am fine no gloves and don't notice the ridge.

i saw someone on insta using a stanley knife to just cut down the ridges a bit

Wireless Campag EPS. I'm happy to believe this is now probably the best groupset money can buy.
-
• #5693
Depends by what measure you think it is "best"
-
• #5694
Definitely not that ^

and this is coming from a guy who's lunch looked like...

It doesn't depend?
-
• #5697
No, the "best" is definitely not that Campag wireless nonsense.
-
• #5698
I agree although I was trying to be a bit more diplomatic but fair enough

The battery life is half of the alternatives and the front and rear batteries are not cross compatible.
It's £4500
It's over 2.5kg
News just in, hardware companies are shit at software.
