  • What happened to it?

One of the ports died. It was connected to either junction A or the battery, so we lost everything. Swapped the wires around so the FD was on the dead port while waiting for a new one.

Where was it mounted? Was it allowed to rattle or get wet?

Loose in the downtube, so it could rattle and it did fail after a wet race, but I think that may have been a coincidence.

If I were relying on Di2 for crossing continents rather than 10 mile TTs, I'd pack spare junctions and wires.

  • I'd pack spare junctions and wires.

6 continental crossings, no Di2 spares. But you know that just means it's more and more likely to happen. The one advantage I have is that I keep killing bikes so the wires/junctions are probably newer than most.

  • can't seem to find any info on the procedure for swapping a part out.

    Surely it's just a re-pair?

  • I assumed that too but it would be useful to know if there's anything more to it

  • What makes you doubt it?

  • Extreme paranoia

  • having replaced a rear derailleur, just had to repair.

  • Cool, thanks all

  • A spare battery would make more sense..

But you know that just means it's more and more likely to happen.

BTW that's not how chance calculations work.

  • I've never carried a spare battery either. Why would a spare battery make more sense than spare cables/junc?

BTW that's not how chance calculations work.

I know. But you don't understand how hippyluck calculations work. If I'm thinking about Di2 spares and decide not to carry any, there is 1000x more chance of Di2 failing...

  • The battery is by far the number one di2 part that gets replaced by Shimano (under warranty).

I know. But you don't understand how hippyluck calculations work. If I'm thinking about Di2 spares and decide not to carry any, there is 1000x more chance of Di2 failing...

    LOL

  • I wonder why new batteries are an issue. Maybe straight from the factory with a poor cell not holding enough charge? Once it's fitted and working I don't see how you can ruin a battery such that it won't charge (I'll find a way now).

  • I had one cable on the under-the-stem junction box failing intermittently, supposedly because the bag bar was pushing and rubbing against the junction box. I've replaced it and modified my setup so that this wouldn't happen again and it's been fine ever since.

  • Didn't know this. You can charge Di2 through any port:

"Hacking the SM-BCR2 to have a standard Di2 cable connector: If your 3-port or 5-port junction is inaccessible for charging, there is an alternative hack method to connect it to the system through a standard Di2 port. With basic soldering skills you can hack the BCR2 to be used with any setup. Buy any length EW-SD50 wire, cut off one end. Cut the wire on the output side of the BCR2. Splice the two wires together, so that the output wire of the BCR2 is now a standard Di2 connector. The charger has an inner (white) and outer (shield) wire; connect the inner white wire to the SD50 red wire; connect the charger outer shield wire to the SD50 black wire. You will then be able to plug the BCR2 into any Di2 port. Or use a SM-JC40 junction B and another length of EW-SD50 wire and go through the RD (by using the SM-JC40 to connect the rear derailleur, new output wire of the EW-SD50, and the wire that ordinarily connect the rest of the system to the rear derailleur.) Thanks to @Di2diy for the info."

    Anyone pulled apart a Di2 BCR2 charger?

  • Anyone pulled apart a Di2 BCR2 charger?

Not yet. I keep being tempted though as I'm sure it could be reconfigured into a smaller and more waterproof unit for ultracycling. I doubt there's much to it internally.

  • Been there, done that.

    Le Whoops

  • I was thinking of just throwing a big bit of shrink wrap over it. Any other suggestions welcome.

  • Pot it in epoxy.

  • Now, explain that in steps as if you were talking to a 6 year old that had to do it. :)

  • if you were talking to a 6 year old that had to do it. :)

Kinda like what they did to Han Solo

  • This. But leaving the LED visible, obvs. Then some shrink wrap.

  • Funny, coz I just did my Darth Vader impression for the missus because James Earl Jones is in the episode of House we're watching. #csb

  • Cheers I'll check it out.

  • I have good experience with a rubber ice cube tray as a mould. Hardest thing will be keeping the USB port functional, might be best to cast the cable with it. My plan would be:

Find a properly sized latex mold, make a hole on both sides, thread through the cable and hope the hole is small enough to seal, fill with epoxy and cut the mold to pieces. Should be doable with any epoxy, can be bought at boat repair stores and the like.

Be sure to do a test run first, if you don't get the ratio right it won't harden and you'll be left with a charger trapped in sticky goo.
