  • Yep, Canbus is the future.

  • Anyone seen detailed "this is what I did" for an internal battery install of Ui2 on a Cervelo S2/S3?

Cervelo have a pdf for Di2 external battery install and I have seen tidy DIY internal battery setups, but I don't know what the new wiring up front means for drilling holes in frame etc. or if it just looks a mess.

    Research porpoises only of course.

  • Cervelo do a guide which shows you where to drill in order not to invalidate your warranty I thought?

EDIT- internal battery for Ui2 may be impossible due to CANbus btw, which maybe why you have not seen it.

  • I want you to repeat exactly what you said after looking at this picture taken in the 19th Century with fixed wheel and no brakes on Europe's steepest and twistiest roads;

It does not prove anything. They're all dead.

  • That U Di2 setup from P-X is for Di2-ready bikes though, yes? So you need to buy other widgets for a 'normal' frameset.

    Cable ties?

Calfee have solutions and other options for Di2 too.

  • Ah, hadn't seen that- so yep, can be done, Calfee must have either duplicated the correct signal protocol, or just hacked up a Ui2 battery and used the wiring from that.

These instructions are pretty good for Di2 installation: http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/di2-shimano-electronic-intelligent-system-installation-1

  • why not invent a tiny dynamo that goes in the BB?
It can't need that much power.

  • Relating to the 'semi or automatic shifting' debate, I can't see that this would work that well in principle. You would have to know when the shift is going to take place or it would result in sloppy gear changes. The combination of shift timing and a brief slowdown of cadence is what helps you achieve this, and I don't see how this could be achieved with anything automatic.Good gear shifting relies too much on the human operating the system.

How does canbus relate to internal battery installs?

  • Good gear shifting relies too much on the human operating the system.

That's not what everyone using Di2 is saying.

  • Answering my question, mid-2012 Shimano has tweeted for Ui2 TT pods according to a WW thread.

  • How does canbus relate to internal battery installs?

With DA Di2 you could just cut the battery socket off the harness and connect an RC car battery, with Ultegra Di2 you need to have the chip that is inside the battery socket, else the system will not work.

Or so I believe- lots of info on the Fairwheel bikes forum.

  • Could that chip not just be moved inline with the cables? It's not a show stopper is it?

  • Nope, and that must be what Calfee has done to offer an internal battery.

  • How much is the full TT DA Di2 kit now?

  • £2300 for full group or
    £1200 for shifting kit

  • That's not what everyone using Di2 is saying.

Indeed, but they are still in control of when they shift gear, so can adjust pedalling accordingly, if you see what I mean. Although the shift is electronic the interaction between legs and fingers is still exactly the same. The shifting on Di2 is fecking sweet! Bloody weird at first though..

  • £2300 for full group or
    £1200 for shifting kit

Is that full road group or full TT group? What's the shifting kit include? Link?

  • Just under 50 miles on Dura Ace Di2 today.

I'm not used to it yet- braking for some of the turns at Richmond Park I shifted up instead of down a couple of times, oddly always at the same corner for some reason.

However, Di2 is so fast that you just hit the right button a couple of times and you are in the correct gear.

It's quiet, too- compared to my Apex it's totally silent. To the degree that I found myself looking down at the cassette to make sure it had shifted- after a while I stopped this as I got to trust it.

The front shifting is cracking- and the auto-trimming feature is outstanding. And it makes a splendid "kzert!" noise.

I had my doubts about the brakes, but they work fine- I adjusted the EE Calipers as outlined in their manual, braking was powerful and nicely modulated.

Overall, it really is very good.

  • [Ultegra Di2 STi & Derailleur Kit - Merlin Cycles

    £791.96 till Sunday Midnight.

  • Linky no worky

  • I don't know why. Anyway, they have an extra 10% off this weekend and you can search on their website.
The good thing is, you can get a shifting kit for less than £800 if you don't need the whole groupset.

  • However, Di2 is so fast that you just hit the right button a couple of times and you are in the correct gear.

Peleton magazine have made a comparison experiment with the Campag EPS and Shimano Di2.

Gave it to Scherrit as I reckon he might find it interesting but here's the interesting part.

SRAM Red downshift quicker than both EPS and Di2 something like 1.25 second compare to campag/Di2 1.8-2second.
