  • Though the similarities are odd,

Guy - saves all his cash for an aston v12
Dibnah - same but for a traction engine

They both seem to cost a similar amount too.

  • I liked Dibnah too. Just nice to watch people who are good with their hands and so into their hobbies. I think Guy has a big thing for stationary engines too, think I read somewhere that he bought a Merlin but couldn't run it often because of fuel prices!

  • Can someone lay out how much these things cost, how they're financed etc? Not that I'm thinking of doing it, but I am curious about them. How much are boats? Can you get mortgages/loans? How much is mooring? Is it hard to find a place?

if you are looking for a higher quality boat builder (allen / steve hudsen etc) narrowbeam then you should put aside around £1500 per foot for a completed boat. my father built his from a shell he bought back in 1991ish for £8000. that was a 70ft which he built the inside himself. it did take him about 10 years though!

moorings are generally cheap. he pays £80 a month for his mooring as its basically only somewhere to tie a boat up and he is supplying the living space. the problem is getting a decent mooring. if you are looking at buying/renting, most come with their moorings.

places such as by victoria park which will be more popular have 7-14 day limits, as shops and water points are nearby but otherwise you can moor anywhere as long as your licence is up to date.

and yes you can get a mortgage for one. there is one in battlebridge basin going for 90k

diesel and gas you can pick up from working boats. nboats can use red diesel so you get it for about 65p a litre and thats your boiler and electricity sorted. and cooking on gas

  • thats a great link. isnt this amazing. i didnt think that things like this were out there.

moorings in London can be very expensive depending on location and the length of your boat Battlebridge mentioned in the previous post is going to cost you around £500-600 month

Not strictly true, you need a Continuos cruiser liscence and continuos cruising menas exactly that. There is a real problem in Central London with 'bridge hopping' and BW are trying to clamp down on it. There are some quite difficult politics going on at the moment in the canal world.

The boat itself is worth less that £40k, you are paying the rest because it MAY come with the residential moorning it is on. These moorings are like gold dust and yo must have it in writing from the mooring owner that it will be transferred to you.

Sorry for the curt response but after this mornings training ride I gotta get me head down before heding out again. My girlfriend and I have been researching and looking for our first liveaboard for almost a year now. No I dont know everything there is to know about living on the canals but I can tell you it is not as straight forward as it looks or sounds especially in central London where people are turning to it more and more because it is perceived as a more affordable way of living. Research fully before taking the plunge or you will be taking the plunge. Sorry for the shit spelling and shitter pun!

  • id love a dutch barge. was going to say they go for more like quarter of a million, until i looked at the advert again... doh

A couple of links worth checking out for more info...

  • talking about the clampdowns; it is a problem but the whole time ive worked on the canals, i never really saw BW being able to enforce moving boats on on the stretch we operate on. obviously they were somewhere as a good place to pick up a bargain is the BW boat auctions where they sell the reclaimed boats due to being unlicensed.

  • i had never heard of bridge hopping.

    strong arms

I can't get over that Canary Wharf boat. Gorgeous. And thanks, Chris, get it a bit more now. Nice way to live if you're brave enough to go for it.

  • I bridge-hopped on the Cam once, good fun. Obviously a bit stupid, but so many fun things are.

  • I work on the Lea Navigation and we got caught putting traps out for the crayfish. No fine was issued but we had to apply for a licence to catch them. The only way we could get it was if we could keep records of everything we caught and we were capable of removing at least 2000 per quarter, or something like that. We never bothered. It should be easier from a boat to get away with it though.

If you need to get more gas Jacqui, let me know and I can collect your empty cylinder and get you a re-filled one near my work as I'm only a couple of miles away.

Looking forward to the day you sail past my office. I'll get the fire hoses out to replicate the big regattas.

YES YES YES -- to the gas and to the regatta style entry hehehe

  • Oh and did anyone watch "the boat that guy built" thing on bbc recently. Had quite a bit about doing up a canal boat. It was all a bit too "young lad tries to be dibnah, but fails" though.

that boat is for sale. IMHO they are asking way too much for it. its barely (read not) fucntional except in the barest of ways. that is not what I want in a boat!
did the programme say he finished the boat? Its not even close.

  • Ah ok, have a bit more respect for him now.

Still not as good as this though

    Cracked me up, haha

  • ^^ Nah but it's been on telly innit! I think Reckless is a good name for a boat too.

  • Nov 21.

I have forgotten my proper trousers.

This occurred to me this am as I was getting out of bed. Yesterday, I brought my washing into town and left it to air dry. I thought, mistakenly that there was still one pair in the closet dry and clean there but when i went to find said pair, after putting the washing machine on, i realised I was wrong. My long socks were also in that wash damn it.

My options are jogging pants or my ¾ denim. I have a huge dislike for wearing sweat pants in public. It’s just wrong. The people who wear them so religiously, I’m sorry. Unless you are jogging – which I am decidedly not, they are to be kept to your personal domain. Period.

So, regular socks, bare legs and denim that cuts off just below my knee two thirds of the way through November. Who, me? Yeah, I am rocking the look – blue legs are the new thing.. right? Epic fail.

    Its actually not too bad.
By that, I do mean I am freezing; but there is a saving grace. Paddy installed my burner last night so as I type this I am sitting bare calfed in the back of Miracle diagonally across my very wide new seat with my legs resting on the stairs, and I am warm.

This is my new found favourite position.

For 72hrs prior i was properly miserable. I was entertaining that* Miracle simply wasn’t* and I was not cut for this life. It was a mistake. It was a daydream teetering on the edge of nightmare. I’ve bought this thing, committed to it and I can’t do it. I was low.

    Thing is, I’m an optimist.
    I’ve also caught the flu.
The flu and optimism don’t really mix.
I don’t normally get the flu, but having it proved a good lesson in boat logistics.

The things the flu taught me about my boat:

    1. I have 3 shallow buckets that are much easier to reach than either the toilet or the big one under my stairs.
    2. The sink does splash back. Best to save it for spitting.
3.You can, whilst arguing on the phone with someone, get on the top stair and project over the back landing of the boat. Erm, mind the newly reinstalled outboard.

Since the burner has been working my outlook has brightened considerably. Warm DRY heat is vastly different than the wet heat provided by my initial system. I listened when people said that. I committed to getting a wood burner, but truthfully until last night I didn’t fully understand when people spoke about it. The difference is in the air around me. The damp is gone.

    The damp is horrible.

Last night I my sheets weren’t freezing cold and ever so slightly damp when I got into bed. My shower towel is dry and well, things just seem a bit better.

  • Me neither (well, 5 years, since I left home), I just watch everything on iplayer!

  • @marky @coppi that - I've uploaded pics to my FB - you're both able to see them, they're crappy pics though - although I do love my view at the moment.

  • OMG!!! I wish you could all see this. MY KETTLE IS BOILING from being on the burner!!! YIPPEEE! (ok so it did take a while)
    I feel proper now.

  • once I get a non-office day, I think I may have to come up and visit you again...

  • you should absolutely... seems I am here for a while yet. I got bumped today for another boat with holes in it (thats twide now) but i do get the urgency of that sort of thing..

things are getting done, but slowly..

This is why I like this forum...

  • Today is full of WIN

I am sitting here nearly sweating. Take that flu!
I can boil my kettle without GAS
I've just realised i can dry / warm my towel by hanging it on the key hooks next to the burner

    AND

With some modification I can also have a drying rack (although this would need to go away if I have guests)

  • Last night I noticed Duckie's sleeping position went from the night befores "tight ball of kitteh" to sprawlling on back, belly to the air - legs extended fully & tail as far away as possible..

  • Happy kitteh!
