• just read about this and thought since its in my region i may attend
    5th November, in Bristol.

    http://hacksawschallenge.com/

anyone else done it or thinking of doing it

    looks fun.

  • Yes. Oz has put his name down too.

Do it. It is good for out-of-towners as there is no real local knowledge needed. The route is pretty set.

  • what time of day does it start/finish?

  • I've no idea yet.

    Follow this.

Most riders were in by 1 hour 45 mins or so last year AKAIK.

  • Barstards, I was in flounce mode.

Last year iirc it was a 5pm meet then something like a 6pm start. You need lights as it will be dark by the time we start. Some people did a fancy dress as it was on the Halloween weekend. Me being me I ignored that and went for standard riding gear. There's a decent variation of riders so even if some riders sprint off there will always be someone there. What I do want to stress though is that despite it being a race there is no need to blindly ignore traffic lights/piss off drivers/get run over. Also watch the wheels in front, if you're not too confident or have no experience of riding in a group leave a little gap to the rider in front. A few guys almost came off because of touching wheels and one guy did. I don't want to be taken out by noobs/kamikazee nutters.

Here I am at the start - centre left in the pink/green mint sauce jersey (le google if you're puzzed by 'mint sauce jersey')

It might be worth changing the thread title to "2011 Hacksaws Challenge" Easier to search for.

  • ooooh...

  • Do it 6pt and show them how its done

  • oz would probably show me how it's done. could train it there and back for the evening though hmm.
(And a reasonably flat 25 mile course is just my cup of tea)

  • i am not gonna go.

but the roads do go quiet for about 2 hours when everybody is at the fireworks = it is a kinda good time for a ride.

  • if 6pt is going everyone may as well give up now.

  • so true

  • Sounds fun. How hilly is it?

  • i read its quite flat. mint sauce is a mountain bike thing isnt it? that sheep cartoon?

  • if 6pt is going everyone may as well give up now.

    Have you seen who's riding?

  • ^ yes, 6pt.

  • we could race to bath and then pootle on to warminster where my dad lives

he comes up to London once a week, so if organised we could send clean clothes and stuff with him to warminster in advance

there are 6 or 7 spare beds at his place

  • I can't even manage a sub-hour 25. if anyone besides your standard fixie skidder type turns up, which is an inevitability, I'll be dropped pretty sharpish. Plus my only fast fixed atm is the wannabe TT bike, disc tri bars and all. I'll look like a cock turning up on that, and an even bigger cock doing badly on it.

  • James, if you're in then I'm in. My old flatmate lives in Bristol now so was going to see if I could crash hers, but considering the date she'd probably be out somewhere doing exciting things, so your solution sounds logisticially simpler (but more intrusive to others)

  • let me check with him that its ok to have a fixie skidder invasion that weekend

  • I shall check with flo also, she's always pleased to see me and seemed reasonably central when i visited at exmouth exodus time. Might even come down and see what it's all about, but after her time living with me I think she has a healthy air of suspicion when it comes to cyclists and their follies.

Lose the disc and you'll be alright. I'm thinking of doing it on the TT bike. There are some slightly more serious fixie skiddrs, but they're still skiddrs.

PJ on the first HC http://hacksawschallengedotcom.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/11267_200859994007_732224007_4002378_5784617_n.jpg?w=604

  • Yeah that's the look I've currently got going =/ got less carbonny disc alternatives though so all will be well. Is it more solo TTy or open road group riding-y with an elbows out sprint at the end?

  • think i might come along. don't have anything better to do and would like to meet anyone that might like to meet me. 25 miles in the dark also sounds like good fun. ill get the train cheltenham to bristol then bath to cheltenham. should be fun. just wish i had the right size front wheel and tire for the event. botheration. are the people that attend 'hipsters'? cause trendy people annoy me haha

  • Not many races you get a prize for 27th!

I'm hoping for 10th place again. Just to make it three in a row.

48/13 cost me a bottom bracket last year. 80-84" should be fine.

Fuckin' windy out there tonight. Crosswinds coming from everywhere. A disc will see you flat on the floor.

  • The ride is out and back, no?
