Hi All,
When and where is the next meeting? I find myself losing track a bit.

I imagine some among us will be interested to hear of a Hill Special (built at the Clarion Works, Padiham) for sale. PM me for details, though it's not me that's selling. I'm afraid to say it would need a bit of restoration, and the current owner has decided with sadness he hasn't the time or resources for it.

Oh - and there's no derailleur hanger, natch, so it's been run on t'cog.

Seems like those of us going to the Big Ride are all coming from different parts of London so no Clarion feeder ride but it would be good if those who have the jerseys turned up wearing them.
Also does someone want to do a leaflet to hand out I would but still working on my thesis

I won't have a leaflet for tomorrow, but I can put a general one together for future use.

Saw a couple of zebracyclists as I joined the rally, but no Zebra Cyclist (if you see what I mean). There were so many folks there! Especially considering the inclement weather. In the drizzle I suspect jerseys gave way to fluoro raincoats in the main. However, who is that, at 00.06? National Clarion 1895 will overcome!
Wen Jian rides forth! And chapeau to the missus, who rode with me today despite coming unstuck spectacularly at Newington Green on the way in this morning and ending up sprawled in the bus bay. Stoic and steadfast, she got straight back on, pulled her front basket back into shape at the next lights and said no more of it, despite some stunning grazes. She's the next Hoogerland!

I love that shot you got of the dad with two kids on a standard/prone tandem with a tagalong bolted on the back! Beautiful piece of frankenbikery.

So, who's up for a ride on Monday? I've got the route roughly planned a few pages back, but I think it needs riding! I know that in terms of organisation we aren't quite there yet, but I think a dry run is in order. I'm planning on riding the route on Monday - with a couple of slight modifications that Google doesn't allow, such as riding through Hyde Park and along a short section of the Thames path near Hammersmith (to avoid going on to the Westway) - partly just to make sure that it is rideable as planned. Anyone with me? Meet at the Mural on Cable Street?

OK, given the weather and solitude, I'm not riding the route today. Still on the cards though.

Sorry. Was heading back from a weekend out of town.

Damn, sorry just seen.
Used up all my energy nursing a post-Tweed Run hangover on Monday.
Good on ya for organizing a route, let's get it together and ride it soon. -

No worries, guys - it's been a bit quiet on here of late, and I have not made it to many of the meeting so am as responsible for that as anyone! Seems like a Red Run would be a good idea given the current political climate, but like I mentioned above, the route I've planned is mostly map-based and not tested in reality (sections of it I know, but likewise there are areas I'm not familiar with) and I think that making the route fun, safe-feeling and accessible to a wide range of abilities - as well as with plenty of interesting landmarks/stops is important.
I'd like to ride the route to see the lay of the land, assess it with reference to the above criteria, and make any alterations and edits on the fly. I was planning on using an A-Z and a highlighter pen. this might serve as a first club run too
Then the next step to think about is whether we would like to contact the organisations responsible for the various landmarks and see if they want to join in or otherwise contribute - even if they just use the opportunity to inform people about what they do. For example, I've found out who the head librarian at the Marx memorial library is. If they were interested they could hand out leaflets - or just show some support as people cycle by.
That's the other point - is this intended as a club run or are we looking at opening it up to non-members and promoting it? I thought we were looking at an open ride as the spoke cards/fundraising for London Couriers would be more effective that way - I may be mistaken though.
As for timing, we may have missed May Day but we could always aim for a July 26 Movement!
So who is up for a ride on Saturday 19th or Sunday 20th? I would suggest the weekend coming but I'm going to see Ballet Revolucion on the Sunday and can't do the Saturday...

That was good fun. I actually met another Clarionite there, who didn't know about this forum. I pointed him this direction, so hopefully he will turn up.

Interested in joining and riding, I'll try and make the ride or next meeting.

Excellent. Will be going to that.

^^ That sounds great! It was disgusting the way that he and Tommie Smith were sidelined after that event - particularly as Nazi atheletes were saluting right, right, and centre without censure during the 1938 Olympics.
Peter Norman (the Australian) was actually passed over twice by Australian selection committees, apparently just for holding a favourable opinion of the 2 Americans, and the Aussies even tried to avoid involving him in the Sydney Olympics in 2000!
I am definitely keen to try and attend the talk; sounds really interesting.
Regarding riding this weekend, I'd like to try Sunday. I intend to be at the battle mural on Cable Street for 10.30, and starting the ride at 11. Do mention if any of you might make it as I'll probably be a bit slacker with the timing if I'm on my own. No worries if not; the route still needs checking, and I'm as happy to get myself lost on my own as in a group!

I can't make the ride as I'm Audaxing in Sussex.

Just got back from reccying the route I planned. I think it would be best to drop the penultimate and pen-penultimate waypoints (the Fulham Palace memorial to the International Bridages, and the William Morris society). It took ages to get from Portobello Road to Fulham Palace Gardens, they don't allow bikes there and I was unable to find the memorial in any case. It's possible to ride the North bank Thamespath from Fulham Palace to the William Morris society, despite some occasionally contradictory signage about bikes, but size of the path is quite variable and it took ages to get between the two. Instead I'd cut out the western element of the ride and instead strike out North to Highgate cemetery and Marx's grave from Portobello Road.
Altogether I have had a fun day, and my A-Z is now covered in notes and squiggles in pink highlighter pen... Low point came when I realised that I had left my keys and wallet at home, my phone battery died and I needed a wee but couldn't lock up anywhere. Look Mum sorted me out though.
On the way home I went into the Bike Kitchen and was introduced to Jenny, who told me about the Pedalpalooza festival, June 3rd to June 10th. People are organising and submitting themed rides throughout the period, and she suggested that we could too. I think I'm away doing wedding preparations the week it's on, but it's an idea...

Went to see John Carlos this evening; had to really peg it to get there for 6. Was well worth it!
On offer: two tickets to see Ken Loach talk about and show some of his films, in Peckham, tonight. Person who bought the tickets is ill and can't go. Asking price is 4 pounds per ticket. Is happy to sell individually.
