Yeh and he did twenty miles short of his daily target as they got lost, guess it's why he's practising
-
• #1053
His power numbers are ok. Obviously they might settle down after a few days. Given his power, i'd expect more speed/distance so either poor routing, poor aeros or both.
-
• #1054
He is a big guy. W/kg.
-
• #1055
Isn't he trying to follow (roughly) the coast though, so more hills and shittier roads.
-
• #1056
Yes, so for the rides he's done - kgs is why he's not faster with that power.
His RTW route is meant to be flat, kgs shouldn't matter so much then, but for these rides, you're right, they do -
• #1057
No round he world route can be flat can it?
If it is, all the more reason to aero the f up. -
• #1058
Flat earth society, members all around the globe.

• #1059
If he followed the coast down here, he would have taken much better roads, he stuck to the horrible A3052. Single lane, windy and packed with grockles over the holidays.
-
• #1060
Ease of navigation? It's not as if he's trying to staying as close as he can to the coast.
I'm sure it will be good prep for the huge amount of shit roads he'll have to deal with on his RTW ride.
I didn't mind the short bit of the A3052 I did (Seaton to the turn off for Aylesbeare) on the K&SW600 although I was quite fucked at that point (it was ~15km from the end).
He missed out on the Fowey ferry though. Fool.
-
• #1061
Yeah, ease of navigation. I'm sure he has a very high tolerance for shit drivers, I know I couldn't be doing it day in day out. I don't even like B roads, and ideally the surface is mud. Not much use for round the world records though is it.

• #1062
He also rode the A38 into plymouth! dual carriageway. Ugh.
-
• #1063
I wonder if he's got his support with him now, which means a screening vehicle. Makes dual carriageway a lot less worrisome.
-
• #1064
Good point. Following Vehicle will make it a lot safer.
I feel for the people having to drive 16h a day staring at his arse.
-
• #1065
I hope they are well paid!
-
• #1066
A screening vehicle without flashing lights on a dual carriageway doing ~15mph is pretty dangerous. Would be interested to see what the deal is... I was doing >90 down that stretch into Plymouth last weekend, and the slow lane was doing at least 80.
-
• #1067
I mean, surely going 20mph over the speed limit is causing the danger, rather than the vehicle going slower than that.
-
• #1068
You have a very good point there. I should slow down.

I'm doing the Braunton 150 this Friday as a readiness test for my knee. If all goes well, I'm on for the Highland Trail Race end of May.
-
• #1070
Good luck @gabes
-
• #1071
I'd like to do some mtb races. They're well on my bucket list.
Hope the knee is okay.
-
• #1072
Yeah, do some, super fun. Pretty harsh physically, but always worth it.
Both Braunton 150 and HTR 550 will have neutralised starts, riding the first hill or similar together, then taking a moment to remember Mike. He's also #1 on the HTR start list, as he was supposed to be racing it this year :(
-
• #1073
Yeah. Tour divide is the grail for me. I cannot wait to do it. But I think it'll happen in my 40's. Lots of other things before then to settle.
That's a shame. But a nice gesture.
-
• #1074
Good luck, hope the knee behaves itself.

I'll be there at the start to wave the wife off and probably Ian Fitz as well. I'll look forward to seeing you there.
As much as I respect him for pushing himself, the route he took is bloody awful. Super busy narrow roads. He should fire his route planners.
