Post Ireland blues late addition - aiming for the Ealing Broadway train that gets to WD at 9:46, next one gets in 10:06 if I miss it.

Tim - shame, double hot toddy will see you through the lanes...

  • Platform 14,if you are rushing into paddington! Quick, train about to leave

  • Lovely day out in the lanes - great company, perfect weather despite metcheck's pessimism and Red Kites abundant. Couldn't want for more. Top work from clubman as the only fixed rider, hope the Oxford contingent rode through without any hitches

Cheers for pulling this together Benie and brilliant work from Paul leading us through the back roads - some great additions (most of which I'll never be able to retrace) to the original route. Looking forward to TNRC now...

  • Safe home thank you gentlemen for a fabulous day, pictures and full report when get it together

  • awesome. so glad the weather held. it looked good out of my bedroom window.

  • thanks a lot to everyone, especially Bernie and Paul for leading the way - great ride
    Matthias

  • The Oxford contingent arrived without any difficulty.

Many thanks to Bernie for organising a great ride.

  • bollox, i thought this was tomorrow.....grrrrrrr!!

  • So many happy memories from yesterday.

Chris (Clubman) you are a legend. Single speed all the way, and on to Oxford to see your son.

The red kites were extraordinary, wheeling and sqeaking above us, circling and spiraling in the gusty wind. A great excuse for the ride out into the Chiltern Hills and the kalidescope of autumn colours.

Paul, thanks for those extra cheeky hills when we were getting ragged at the end, and for finding the closed roads and leaf strewn forest trails through Burham Beeches. However, my "favourite" point was when you reminded me near the end that you were only 30 minutes from a hot shower and cup of tea, whilst I had another 2 hours to go! Best man 27 years ago, and still holding the title.

No punctures, no rub, no rain. It does not get much better. Thanks again gentlemen for an awe inspiring ride.

Oh and "pictures or it did not happen" is the call I hear across the wonderweb?

  • Thoroughly enjoyable ride out in some lovely countryside with good company. Big thanks to Bernie for getting this organised and also to Paul for guidance around those lanes. Seemed almost a shame to have to split and go on to Oxford.
Pleasure riding on to Oxford with you Chris, thanks for the tow.
Will do it properly next year. Cheers guys.

Great to have you along Stu. All that way, and not a single gloating word about the mornings match!

I assume you were not indicted by the Hertford lawyers when you arrived at the dreaming spires?

  • Wouldn't have dreamt of it Bernie, I'm saving it for my French flatmates next week! No trumped up charges for me either, kept a low profile....ish!

  • I'm flattered by the comments above about my fixed wheel riding, but I honestly don't think it's all that difficult to do a ride like this one on a single gear.

It cetainly would be difficult if it were necessary to avoid being dropped both uphill and down by others riding modern road bikes, but that wasn't how we were riding. In fact I think most riders would take a bit longer to do this ride fixed, but I doubt whether it is any more tiring. For me, there are limits to what I would try to do on fixed: training runs with others on gears and carrying luggage up mountains are both out, but for this sort of outing, as long as I'm not in a tearing hurry, I prefer fixed.

If you've read this far, have a look at Wayfarer's Saturday Chiltern Rides thread, where I have just posted a ride for this Saturday.

  • sorry to have missed this bernie. but thought of you last friday when i did the route myself and then rode on to oxford.

rather disappointingly i only saw two red kites. one as i rode through Fingest and the other one around Christmas Common.

    still enjoyed those lanes though.
