I believe (but could be wrong) that companies benefit from corporation tax relief resulting from charitable donations.
-
• #15105
But these are donations by customers to charities, not donations by the company from profits.
-
• #15106
I really donāt know and second guessing.
At point of round-up charity donation, is that 1p going direct to the charity from the individual, or to McDonalds/āevil-big-corpā who make a monthly/annual donation from their name? I would have thought the latter (but again could be wrong), and that this would appear as a company charitable donation.
-
• #15107
I have always suspected that there is a darker side to the rounding up charity donations as well that big corporations facilitate.
-
• #15108
But what would be in it for the company?
They would need to consider your x pence as extra revenue, so raising their tax bill by y... only to then donate x pence and accordingly reduce their tax bill back down by y, to what it was before.
This is not the same as a company making its own donations from profits.
-
• #15109
They only act as a collection agent on the customers behalf. They don't, as far as I know, receive any tax relief as a result. I think it's an urban myth that they're receiving a tax break for your donations.

Not surprising that it flew under the radar given (gestures at the world), but pushing the US further into dystopia is the State of Tennessee, that in 2022 made it a felony to camp without authorisation on state or local land. Basically: protesting or homeless? Gtfo or spend 6 years in prison providing nearly free labour for corporations, with the benefit of destroying your future prospects and increasing your odds of returning to prison.
Technically police have to give 24 hours notice, but thereās ways and means of giving notice without the recipient realising, so thatās a deceiving requirement.

Runaway diesel isnāt the same thing. Thatās often due to unwanted fuel or oil getting into the cylinders which causes the engine to run away. Itāll often only stop once itās consumed all the oil in the sump.
The black smoke is a fundamental issue with diesel combustion. Low cylinder pressures and low (relatively) injector pressure causes that black smoke. Because the combustion is so incomplete, a lot of air gets out unused, so those diesel tuners simply pump more fuel in until all the air gets used and that gives them their maximum power. The result is all that black smoke.
Auto manufacturers started getting round this in the early 00s by significantly increasing the cylinder and injection pressures and injection timing. That increased the fuel efficiency somewhat and stopped most of the black smoke, but forced the particulate size smaller. PM10 became PM5, and now PM2.5 and smaller, which is basically nanoscale particulate and quite carcinogenic because it readily passes through cell walls.

Have we moved into the bās yet? There was one we used to set light to, inhale, neck it, them snort the remnants. Wish I could recall the spirit. If I hadnāt snorted so many Iād perhaps remember.
sorry for the slight dredge, this sounds similar to a drink that was popular at a local club I frequented in my student days - a sambuca gas chamber.
a shot glass was over filled with sambuca so it spilt onto the metal bar, set alight, then a bigger glass was placed upturned over the flaming shot. the 'gas' was then sucked out of the upturned glass with a straw before the shot was necked.
fun times.as you were!

gift aid / write off tax donations.
I don't know anything about the tax affairs of the companies that use pennies.org.uk, but I do know that 100% of the donations go to the charity, with nothing being passed to either the "host" retailer or pennies themselves. The latter are a not-for profit that are 100 percent funded by philanthropic donations. Or at least they were when I worked there. I haven't kept up to date, but am sure that the information is freely accessible on their website.
I should note that I worked there on a voluntary pro bono basis, as did a lot of other (some very senior) consultants there.

My mum's fiat 500 did this, was not fun apparently.

I had a company Isuzu pick up do it to me after I booted it out of a junction turning right on the A4. It just went into infinite acceleration with a massive white cloud out of the back. I sort of knew what was happening but I could stop where I was so went a couple of hundred metres further before switching the ignition off and standing on the brakes. I got out quickly because it smellt like it was going up. It had done a touch of the *Torrey Canyon all along the road and it appeared that the increased crankcase pressure had blown all the seals bathing the engine in oil too. I called the filth to get them to call out the council for a clean up of the road and with assistance got the truck off the road. That was the day before Boris told everyone to leave work and go home. As far as I know it still isn't fixed.

If you're genuinely interested in learning a bit more, I recommend watching some videos with Gale Banks talking about how to make the most power from diesel engines.
He has some great stories about all the "cool" things he's done in his life (hot-rodding, power boat racing, land speed records). He's got the kind of voice I could listen to all day long, but also he says categorically a diesel engine belching out black smoke is inefficient, it's not making power, and it's generally because it's been designed and tuned by people who don't know what they're doing.
His company designed and built this racing truck for Pikes Peak, note the lack of black smoke.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkCnpqNU-hM&ab_channel=BanksPower
You can also look up his Sidewinder diesel drag pickup which held the diesel 1/4 mile record for a long time, almost zero black smoke.

What happened when I got into the diesel thing, you know the 6.2Ls
and then the 6.9L from Ford in ā83ā¦they smoked! It was just common,
thatās what diesels did. And we didnāt think a lot about it. As the
years have progressed, my thoughts on smoke have been āWhy on earth
would you want to put the fuel in the engine and then not burn it
there? Why do you want to take fuel and put it in the air?ā I want to
put it in the engine, make power, and kick somebodyās ass. Or use it
to go furtherā¦I want mileage out of it. So, this whole idea of pouring
out black smoke kinda goes back to tractor pulling. To make big power,
those guys with pre-electronic engines just poured the fuel to it and
got this column of black smoke. So black smoke became associated in the Midwest with power. Manhood
and power have always gone together. So this was your symbol of power.
Now, my symbol of power is a world record. My symbol of power is a
national championship. My symbol of power is kicking your assāand I do
it without smoke. -

@Constable_Savage Did the engine actually explode or did you stop the engine in time.
Have had the engines that didn't stop and then reved themselves to explosion.

• #15124
I switched it off while rolling in gear and held the foot brake on and it stopped and every gasket and oil seal gave way. The engine was dripping from top to bottom so it was certainly pressurised. What it actually did I do not know but the term "proper fucked" was used. The company were the tightest of tight arses so sent it to some backstreet shitty garage for repair.
