I just googled "diana never forget" and that was the first hit, and middle-endian dates are always going to confuse me.

On a day where I read that 50% of Britons don't know about the Holocaust, you seem bang on the money.
If you're talking about this Guardian article, then it's just clickbait. It confesses that the survey:
....found that the overwhelming majority of respondents (89%) said they had definitely heard about the Holocaust
The "half of Brits" claim was those who couldn't recall that it was 6m Jews. I'd struggle to remember the figure myself, if asked, tbh.

try asking people if they know about the asian holocaust. so much just isn't spoken about.

or how many Russians died in WW2, see if they get close to either the military or civilian number, let alone the combined total.

I think Stalin said something along the lines of “one death is a tragedy but when you’re in the millions, it’s just a statistic”.
-
• #12439
I forget that this forum does that... then I remember.
Needs to be formatted like this:
| Header 1 | Header 2 | | -------- | -------- | | Value 1 | Value 2 |
Does not need to be cleanly aligned, messy works too, just pipe delimited columns.
i.e., this is equivalent:
| Header 1 | Header 2 | | --- | --- | | Value 1 | Value 2 |

Supraliminality. Our ape minds lose grasp of the significance of high numbers, so while 10k deaths is a tragedy, 20k deaths doesn’t “feel” twice as tragic, and so on.

I went to Verdun cemetery a few years back. There's supposedly 150k men buried there. Whether it's true or not, it's a truly horrifying place between the white markers (theres a significant section of muslim graves so not just crosses) and the ossuary. Impossible to comprehend the scale of death really, even when presented with that.

my dad took me there on our drive back from his farm house near Epinal when i was 13. really sombre experience.
sadly the lasting memory for me was my dad had been telling me all about how it's such a damaged place that even now the birds there don't sing. so he wasn't happy when I pointed out the very obvious birdsong to him while we were there.
