  • Should new groupsets be mounted on older bikes.
Or is that just dressing up mutton as lamb ?
    Discuss.

  • Depends.

If it's steel, keep it classic.

    It's it's aluminium I reckon it's open season.

  • I've got new Ultegra on an old steel Colnago. It was the best thing I ever did to it.

  • ditch the old shit.

  • I've got full ultegra on an old steel frame.

    It gives me a semi-on

  • it's only cool if it's delta, anything else is shite. a steel with record 11 is rather tasty.

  • Puppy killers.

    The lot of you.

  • put modern groupset on it, no point keeping the old one (unless it work perfectly well for what you want it for).

(90s) 8 speed Chorus cassette with Chorus hubs and Amboriso rims - 1800g.

(2010) 10 speed Centaur cassette with Amboriso hubs and Mavic Open Pro rims - 1400g.

modern stuff make a huge difference.

  • Depends on the bike, there is plenty of new old stock floating about so there is no real excuse for going modern.

  • Aesthetically speaking, for me nothing beats, early 90’s Shimano/Sun Tour/Ritchey. Still some NOS bargains to be found on eBay!

Apologies for a derail - but Ed where is that picture from - as my 2yr old daughter needs that trike!!

  • thats ed's front room
    it's his cruiser

  • lol... etc...

  • like it... 1st dibs then just in case the tt is a bit long

I'd like to know where it all is. As far as I can see building up a period gruppo takes TIME.

Also you can't fit modern 10sp to older and beautiful campy wheels?

  • all depends if it's a walking wanker show-off bike for hipsters or a bike for riding.

  • Nice Col there, shame about the off-road tyres and weird handlbars.

Campyoldy, all the different ebay's, local bike shops...sure it takes a bit of work but the end result is worth it in my opinion. Everything that is worth doing takes time, but it makes the end result all the sweeter.

Agreed but it illustrates another murphie's law in that whichever great gruppo part you pass on due the rarity of the other bits, those other rare bits will magically appear shortly afterwards. The converse of this is also the case but much more expensive.

  • when i say old i mean a 2000 bike with some 2008 bits on, it's not like a classic chrome lugged rarity

it's a rider european tours and the like bordeaux and back in three days up to denmark for a coffee and back

what have you bought or what are you planning?

afaik its a trek trike, they are well expensive. get her a like-a-bike of some sort.

Dicki- do what you want, i reckon new on old is okay,
but old on new is naff, but who gives if it runs well.

  • That Colnago is the gayest bike I have ever seen.

  • Why, thank you, it was quite a happy bike when I had it.
