Yeah, I just put the rubber band 'parking brake' on and alarm the chainring.

I just use this Aluminium D-lock (mine's pink tho so 10x cooler). It weighs sweet fuck all and if you use the sheldon brown locking method works pretty well. Tucks into the webbing bit at the bottom of the restrap saddle bag pretty good too.

Alpkit are having a bit of a sale. No massive savings but good if you were already thinking about buying something.

Girlfriend bought me an Apidura saddle bag for my birthday.
I think I should marry her (not talking about the bag here)
-
• #1835
I'm not sure you should call her that.

Just don't shuffle tumblers too much, I just move one tumbler by a couple of clicks. One by a single click and leave one in the correct position to unlock it. Odds are that if someone tampers with it the first thing they will do is lock the final tumbler. If someone wants to rob your bike they will just cut the cable so having the tumblers well shuffled is pointless.

"Features 4-digit combination lock"
But I can only see 3 numbers.
-
• #1838
Does the cable retract or do you have to wind it up each time?
-
• #1839
Yeah same I tend to just change a single digit. The alarm going off pretty much as soon as you touch the lock means it's fairly irrelevant how "shuffled" it is.
Still maintain that combi > key for touring

I remember a while ago someone on here got a alarmed motorcycle disc lock and used it on his chainring.

Stops someone riding away but leaves your QR wheels open for taking.
-
• #1842
Also doesn't stop someone from picking up your bike and walking off with it.

• #1843
the alarm would sound.

Anyone ever use the overboard ones as link?
-
• #1845
they look great, but same price as Ortliebs..
-
• #1846
My one (not the one you've linked) had a spring recoil, lasted about five uses. After that I just coiled it up. It's now been stolen, my theiving brother uses it for cafe stops on his club run.

I'm doing some loaded-but-hopefully-not-too-heavy touring, based primarily on a rear rack + pair of Ortliebs set-up, but looking into options for using the front end as well, without having the weight of another rack + front panniers. To free up some space at the back, I'm thinking of a fork-based solution for carrying some of the bulkier but lightweight gear, e.g. a sleeping matt or two. Would something like the Salsa Anything + dry bag be the right kind of idea? I have a carbon fork with mid-fork eyelet. Will that work? Any other options?

alpkit kangaroo thing?
-
• #1849
You've stumped me there, can't find any mention of kangaroos on Alpkit's website. While I'm at it though, would one of their dry bags with additional attachment points work? I suppose I'd need to find a way to stop it sliding down the fork...

Ta. I normally use a crappy Halfords key cable lock on audax but it's not very long and bulky.
