I can just hear the braking surface melting away in the grit 😍 Lovely stuff

Huge kudos for hitting the lanes. I stuck to laps instead to avoid this happening.

I'm taking my 586 to the highlands next week, I imagine it'll come back looking something like that.
Somewhat sacrificial as I'm going to strip it down and show it some love in the new year with carbon bars, carbon wheels and eTap.

Can someone school me on the Look 585/595? I'm thinking about tracking down one of these and getting it custom painted for a 2023 project - they've always struck me as a wonderful example of the old style mixed with modern materials and (apparently) a great ride feel.
- Will either fit a 25mm tyre on a modern wide rim (say, GP5000S on a 20mm ID rim?)
- How annoying is the ISP on the 595?
- Is there much of a difference in ride quality between the 595 and 585?
- Is there anything that I should look out for when buying second hand? Seems like the thrust washers in the headset can be painful to find but other than that seems okay? How about spacers for the 595 ISP?
- How's the internal cable routing on the 595? Would be looking to set up with mechanical group.
- Anything else I should know?

25mm tyre is tight. You won’t be able to get much wider on. I can’t remember what width my rims are but they’re quite narrow lightbicycle carbon rims.
Internal cabling is a doddle, I run mine with mechanical Campagnolo Super Record 11 speed. Rear brake runs through the top tube, and the derailleur cables run internally down the downtube in plastic housing and then come out just before the BB. ISP is great - you’ll know your saddle will never not be straight. I think Look don’t advise using more than 30mm of spacers - I never cut mine down as the person I bought it off was close enough to me in size that I could make it work with spacers. If you want a pdf copy of the 595 manual I have one. I think if you need to cut the ISP down Look made a guide for the job, I don’t know how easily they are to track down, but I’m sure people on this parish can help.
I love my 595, I’d thoroughly recommend getting one; they do come up on eBay every now and then

Depends what sort of "25mm"
I've got 700×28 with 17mm internal rim on my 585, but they're really only 26.5 and that's about the limit if you want any debris clearance at all. A 25C GP5000 on a 20mm rim is going to come up wider but probably no higher, so you should be OK, since the height is more of an issue than the width. -

Yeah, I was riding down to my mum’s which is normally 100km but I tacked on an extra 60 or so km for good measure. I was having to take it so steady in the lanes, my average speed was about 5km/h slower than my normal pace. Better that than an off though

I gave them a good clean today and they were surprisingly fine. I think modern carbon rims are much more durable than early carbon. But yeah, I can definitely see the appeal of disk brakes…

Huge thanks for this - all really useful. I think if the seatpost needed cutting for me it'd go to a mechanic, I've not got a steady hand at the best of times so probably wisest that someone else does the chopping.
I'm down in Australia so availability is a little less, but there's a Look 595 going for a reasonable-ish price (£1250 with 2009 Record 11 and Shamals which I'd probably sell off) if I can convince the seller to ship. Not in a hurry so might spend some time deciding whether I'd prefer a 585 or 595 but it sounds like both would be pretty up my alley.
Light Bicycle report that a GP5000S 25mm comes up at 26.5mm on a 21mm ID rim, so seems like I'm probably safe on that front with a 585 or 595.
Hmmmm, decisions, decisions.

If only it was just the frame set!

Hmm quite a 'small' XXL, 399mm reach is not too much. You can always sell the wheels and group yourself.

R&A Cycles have a NOS XXL 695 i-Pack for $2500, import from the US is no worse than from the EU these days 🙂

It depends on the shipper.
Be very cautious with DHL, UPS and FedEx!
All three absurdly overcharge for brokerage and import duty. Mail is far better. Risk of damage from all 3 is about equal, mail is less because mail stream has less heavy parcels stuffed into air cans. Mail parcel limit is around 30kg, commercial carriers are about 70kg.

All three absurdly overcharge for brokerageYeah, but they're global companies so you're just as likely to find an EU shipper using them. Agree in principal that personal users are better off with national postal services, even the much derided USPS

Finished my 785 Huez RS a few days ago. I just need to chop steerer and fully dial in position, though it is pretty much an exact copy of the fitting that Scherrit did on my 595 up thread

@HoKe I think I saw you yesterday riding out east through Poplar, the bike looked great!
I had an absolutely disgusting 6.5 hours on my 595 today. The lanes were filthy. The wind blew my bike over just after I took this photo; miraculously neither saddle nor lever were scuffed.
