  • were going to Lanzarote to run on volcanos, then swim in the sea after.

thanks for all advice given, good reference thread

  • i cycled ethiopa to ct last year, one of the highlights was cycling up table mountain for dawn. Truly beautiful place to see the sun rise, with a great switchback offroad path.
great cycling up/down the garden route and from ct along to the cape good hope, via chapmans peak.

  • Flying to SA tomorrow evening for two weeks.... counting down the hours.

Will be in cape town for the first week and then up north to Kruger for the second week via a couple day in Joburg.

I've been a bunch of times so have a good feel for what I want to do whilst I'm there but does anyone know of any interesting events happening at the moment that would be good to do/see?

A few more epic views like these from my last trip would go down pretty damn well...

  • Agree! Lived there for years did the Argus 8 times. Would love to do it again.....maybe next year!

  • i'm off to SA next week, bringing my bike, catching up with friends and pottering round. Thinking of heading down from Jo'burg to Ladysmith, then heading into the Drakensburg for a few days, before racing in the Karkloof.

    Any thoughts?

  • Bumping - surely there must be some Saffas on here who can offer a bit of advice on cycling in their great land. Any views on general safety of cycling once I get outside Jo'burg - rural areas down towards Durban? Also, Drakensburg - what sort of steepness are the hills - how doable on a fixie with panniers?

  • Well, thanks a lot for all your help, local Saffas - may weevils infest your biltong and Wimbledon drown beneath the waves.

Anyway, if anyone fancies cycling in SA, I highly recommend it - long, good quality, straight roads, not much traffic outside of the cities, fantastic welcoming people. Carry a few packets of sweets for the township kids who come out to wave at you. Don't ride a fixie with panniers tho, in KZN at least, it's fucking hilly. Looking at a map with contours might have told me that before I left.
