  • You came out of the toilet when I came out of the shower...

    OK I had a wee.

  • On reflection, I think I'll stick to Souths.

You don't even want to know where Owen was.

  • Come to south easts for a week. or beer is pricier; food, not as good; garden, less gardenny; hill, non existent. You're all welcome any time :)

  • is this the North Poll?

  • We had a similar discussion (about pub staff and locals) over on the SE drinks thread a few months ago.

In a nutshell, a large group of drunk people might actually not fit into the vibe of a pub that staff/owner/regulars want. I agree that could/should be of no concern to us but it is much nicer to drink in a venue that is pleased to see you and take your custom.

In the case of SEs, after some reflection we were being a bit full on for the Roebuck and after we clamped down on the one or two people who were acting like dickheads and made sure that we tried to enjoy ourselves there but also allow other punters to enjoy themselves too we have become welcomed customers. One member of bar staff there actually chose to work the Tuesday night shift because she enjoys us being there or so she told me a few weeks ago.

I have never been to Norths ...have no idea what the flask is like or how Norths drinks normally goes down. My point is that some pubs like to be quiet and attract couples having an overpriced dinner rather than 20+ laughing and joking drunk cyclists. Acceptable behaviour can still be annoying to people and its amazing how quickly things can get petty.

You can argue that a pub would be stupid to discourage custom but there is no law against being stupid.

Of course, this could be totally irelevant and OwenReed could be wrong. In the case of SEs, it took a while for the barstaff to talk to us openly about how management was feeling about us so it was a gradual realisation that perhaps things had to change a little.

    Well put.
Yesterday was just a bit of a freak... 30-35 of us, on the birthday evening, a hot pleasant evening, attracting all the locals too. If we hadnt been there it still would have been very busy anyway though.
We made up, in 1 group, probably 1/2 of the total customers there for the evening, and the pub was pre-warned. Nobody misbehaved, we probably spent close to a grand between us.
With the exception of the walking out of bounds with drinks incident (me included) I cant see how the staff or landlord could take issue with us being there.

  • Coincidentally, drinking out of bounds was one of the problems that the Roebuck had. That and the landlord unreasonably being annoyed at us eating food from other places nearby. As I said above, people don't have to be reasonable in their views/opinions.

The Roebuck can be pretty civilised and sedate so it is easy for a busy SEs to clash with the desired vibe.

One of the Roebuck staff signed up to the forum and has posted on the SEs thread.

Anyway, I vote for Norths to move to the Roebuck.

  • To be fair, we have never had a problem with the staff at the Flask (not that I'm aware of) Most of them know us already and are very friendly to us. In fact one of the waiters even wears the North's t-shirt on Tuesdays! It's true that other pubs make you feel more welcome, but it's also true that the Flask is a big venue with plenty of different kinds customers. We are just a fraction of it.

  • None of the regulars at the pub particularly enjoyed us being there last night, and neither did the staff. Apart from that one guy behind the bar.
    ....

That tall girl in the green totally enjoyed me being there last night! At least until I opened my mouth and nonsense started to spill out....

The fact that I walked out with 4 pints without paying possibly didn't help either.

I reckon tour should be Bree Louise, Enterprise, then Big Red.

    Done.

All pubs one of us have fallen off at on a friday night.

  • All pubs one of us have fallen off at on a friday night.

Exactly. You can't test more rigorously than that!

  • Big red it is.

    +1

  • If you guys make it a Big Red, I'm in. I'll bring goth floozies.

  • Keep it at the flask!

it makes my yearly visit special

  • 1.The landlord wears a Norths T shirt - they love us.
2.Lots of new staff have started we need to bed them in a bit.
3.The only people who moan about the Flask don't come anyway

    1. Norths on tour is on a Friday

    I rest my case.

When are you moving to Northampton Owen? Will you have a spare room for JD? (joke)

I agree mostly but it's not even because I live down the road, norths stays put at the flask, i don't mind it travelling once a month or so but all birthdays should be at the flask, the staff don't mind us, a couple of the punters even suggested they move their table so we could access our bikes , andys spirit will be turning in it's grave if we move base, maybe we should fuck off pizzas and do the big red after as a tradition, I wouldn't mind that. I'm voting once a month at a different location but as long as it's regularly noted and it's made clear for everybody to read, ideally I say bugger all to moving any where on a Tuesday but I accept it is a group forum and it could be good to have a change if thats what the majority want....

    Not true!

    Neg repped.

    Your dead to me!

I'm off back to the SA more friendly staff and bloody cheap or the Hawley as they now have aspell.
Good luck with what ever turns out as im off!

  • Ya big flouncer. You'll be back.

I've voted once a month, but a while back we tried a pub first then the flask. I liked that. The SA is a much better pub, but it's not up a giant hill.

  • I don't like the atmosphere at The Flask, it really ain't my bag and am also put off by the poor selection of cider and over pricedness. So I will continue voting with my feet and meet up with whoever meets to drink elsewhere.

To me Norths is the people and not the pub, but I know I'm in the minority of this view so am happy for the majority to follow the great leader and stick to The Flask.
If u decide to go on tour then I'll prob come out to play.

  • lot's of great opinions. know our laundry has been hung up in public, it seems that the majority of people like the Flask.

for the record, I don't have a problem with any of the staff, was just provoking a reaction..

  • Is your laundry still hung up?

    Must be very wet.

  • Is your laundry still hung up?

    Must be very wet.

No! He's wet behind the ears.

  • Can we come and see you in Shoe town Owen?

  • It's not about the Flask as a venue, is it? I wouldn't actually mind so much the prices, poor selection and rude staff if the place was packed every Tuesday evening. It's not. I remember some time ago coming up the hill and there was only 6 people including me. And I can't remember the last time we had a newbie or Eastie/Westie/Southie visitor. As a forum drinks, North is failing.
Friday drinks (which I actually find more enjoyable) does not qualify as North on Tour, since no one outside a rather small group is actually aware of it.
I would still come up the hill (from time to time) if we do stay at The Flask but as it is, it really isn't what a LFGSS drinks should be about.

  • Norths on Tour

Friday tomorrow! I have one or 2 ideas.
