Guess this is the thread to ask this: recommendations for decent (floor/free-standing) reading lights? I keep getting ads for the 'Serious Reader' lights, but £200 for their cheapest seems like an awful lot; they seem to use nice dimmable daylight LEDs with high CRI, but that still seems pricey for something that's blandly inoffensive looks-wise.

What is the light you're fitting them into? I know i bang on about this but clear lamps are pretty grim unless heavily diffused.
I think Tala are mostly 2500k which is too warm for anything other than night-time settings IMO. I have a range of them and they're pretty syrupy in the day, they also don't dim particularly well. I've had good results with Zico and Calex.

For work or the home? Needed for day or night only?

Mainly reading at home - the Anglepoise on my desk does ok for work, but my living room's quite dark, and (presumably because of advancing decrepitude) I've noticed I'm finding it harder to see small text/fine detail when sat reading.

Then tbh a floor standing or wall mounted anglepoise might suit you. To get enough light on the page for tired eyes from an overhead requires a very bright source that if poorly packaged will be very glary. Better to bring the source closer to you to get more light and avoid shadowing and glare. You can get high CRI in 2700k but it will yellow the white of the paper noticeably in the day.

I like Philips warm glow LEDs, spendy but they dim properly and get nice and bright.

My main problem with lightbulbs right now is that even the 1,5 w led one in my bedside table, which seems to be the lowest available, feels way brighter than I remember 15 w oldschool bulbs.

Two hanging pendent lights.
The room is currently office and dinning room. With one of the pendents hanging over the laptop.
The current clear bulbs sort of work as the inside of the lights/reflector is white. But I'm not adversed to opaque. I got these in the end: Osram LED Lamp/E27 Base/Warm White (2700 K)/Replaces 60 W Incandescent Bulbs/8.50 W/Frosted/LED Base Classic A, Pack of 3 https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B019QAU9PA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_i_H9QJ5326JQC0Z4DWVT0N
Hoping they won't be too bright, as there are two.
But won't need to use them until these Philips blow. -

anyone know if you can use individual vitsoe components with elfa tracks ? elfa don't do a desk shelf but don't want to pay vitsoe prices for a full system
-
• #4269
Vitsoe use a different fixing system, so it won't fit twin-track rails. Elfa do reinforced brackets that are 57cm deep, so you could probably get some ply or whatever cut and use those? As long as you're not putting ridiculous weight on the desk you could probably make it a bit deeper. https://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/product/elfa-twin-slot-shelving-system-reinforced-shelf-bracket-570mm-length-white-453472

Great

You could splice in cut down Vitsoe e-tracks for the desk portion, depending on what kind of layout you are going for.

I'll probably just go with the elfa desk shelf
Just don’t get into LED dimming…
