  • I like it, btw. Not sure if I'd posted that already or not.

  • ha

  • To be honest, I found the last third a bit predictable. I know it's a traditional story arch - from beginning to ending, the tale of a number of individuals becoming something bigger than anyone of them could be on their own. That's fine, but it's a bit "samey." And I'm not saying you should get all M Night Shyamalan on it. That's the last thing the film world needs. But maybe take some cues for Von Trier's later work. The second he became predictable, he turned that predictability back on the audience. For example, everyone familiar with his work must have went into Dogville expecting a couple hours of torture followed by a tragic and depressing conclusion. When he twisted that ending, giving the audience exactly what they wanted, he showed them that they perhaps were not the best judges of what they wanted. By making the ending they thought they wanted into something so grotesque and terrible, he was able to play with the audiences own desires and expectations, and the relationship they have with both the film, and him as a director.

What I'm saying is, maybe he puts the wheel on a bike and it tacos or something. That'd be a laugh.

that and a lack of a love interest

  • I dunno. The nipple on spoke action was a bit raunchy.

  • Good stuff.

Like the way the shot lingers when he hangs the wheel up so gently at the end. You just know that someone's going to buy it and ride through some massive potholes though.

Impressive stuff to be able to tune tension in a work environment. I always struggle to be able to hear unless I'm building at home in the peace and quiet.

    A nice vignette.

  • cheers a ef. I had fun making it. I wanted Martin to just relax and work normally, so there was no hanging about, setting up, fussing about faking 'natural'... just the process going on and me trying to capture it on the hoof. He worked damn fast! The best part was, it took me a day to shoot, cut and do a really basic grade.

I need to do more of these.

  • Lovely. That is all.

  • really like it skully.

  • The Power of Making starts tomorrow at the V&A. Happy to say Lace Tension True has been selected for the exhibition. Yipee!

  • WOOT!

(do you want to tension and true my wheels?)

  • Congrats Skully! Nice work.

I hope, at the very least, you end up with a nice soiree at the V&A with some free booze. Or a Bafta.

  • Nope! No private view... nothin.

  • Very nice. Me likey.

  • So... This is interesting to me: Up to about 6 months after posting, I got a steady stream of hits for my little film about Martin building a wheel. I was approaching a thousand, having got a few spikes after selection by V&A, and after a couple of posts via blogs like thewashingmachinepost.

Then, in the last two months, I suddenly got up to well over two thousand plays: 214 on a single day at the end of Jan. How do I find out where these new viewers sprung from, anybody?

  • I like it, shame about the hipster model dude that stars in it.

  • He was a very good subject, actually. No talk, just fast work.

  • You do know that Martin and I go way way way way way back, right?

  • I got a hint one day when you mentioned something about somebody.

Can anyone tell me how to trace the hit history of this spike: linkbacks or whatever?

  • It was me.
    It was all me.

  • haha!

  • Well, I first saw your piece at the V & A . I had completely missed this thread and it was an absolute joy and a surprise to see a skilled wheelbuilder featuring in that environment - thank you so much! I sat through all the other shorts so I could see it again. Of course it was the best one, although I was also taken with the two films about coffins. Then I watched it again at home, almost certainly more than once.. and then showed some other people. Then I sent Martin a fan letter. Then I emailed the link to all my friends. So maybe everyone who went did the same as me? I was there 2 Jan.

  • Wow. What a nice review! I agree, the coffins one was fascinating.

Yeah I'm just curious as to how, from a steady 0-5 hits per day lately, it spiked during the week at the end of Jan, just wondering whether someone tweeted it but I'm struggling, with my limited understanding of these things, how the latter 1000 hits appeared so quickly. I'm astounded, frankly, that many of the PoM film only have had ~30 hits, yet mine's had so much more. As my better half sagely told me today: "There's a heck of a lot of bike nerds in the world ..."

  • it may be that the video got featured on the condor website only by the end of january???
