  • So glad they mounted the brake inbetween the chain and seat stay, no need to buy those disc-specific rack.

  • yea. all frames should have that

  • Does that have low-rider mounts?
I have some at the moment, and was a bit sceptical of upgrading to discs and losing the option.

  • looks pretty nice, but why bar end shifters?

that's like saying why does track bicycles not have brakes.

  • looks pretty nice, but why bar end shifters?

More reliable than STIs so less likely to fail in outer Mongolia and bring down the overall cost. For touring you don't need to get that crucial race winning up shift, and bar ends offer a friction shift (not indexed) for the front mech allowing better trimming with a triple chainset

  • that's like saying why does track bicycles not have brakes.

    they should have brakes.

  • Yes they should. No surprise there are so many accidents on the tracks - idiots.

  • looks pretty nice, but why bar end shifters?

it is a very luddite movement of cycling. They have only recently stopped burning shops that sold STIs.

  • ...and bar ends offer a friction shift (not indexed) for the front mech allowing better trimming with a triple chainset

Don't forget that the bar end shifter have a friction mode as well as indexed for the rear derailleur, brilliant option if it no longer indexed properly.

To be fair, the Campag Centaur brake shifter lever have a friction mode for the front derailleur as well as an indexed, which is pretty handy.

Still not something I want to be stuck with in outer Mongolia.

  • Do you tour in Outer Mongolia often, Ed?

  • I go out there pretty much every weekend Andy now Ryanair have started flying to Ulaanbaatar.

  • And how many people actually ever race their fancy carbon road bike? How many people take their 155mph capable car much past 90mph?

Sometimes it's just nice to know that what you have will just work.

pretty sure my old peugeot looked like that and cost £200 all in

And STI's don't work? This is about having a worse solution than is necessary rather than a solution that is above your needs.
I would suggest brakeless fixed for touring as very little to go wrong.

  • Kerly you don't like bar end or friction shifters. We get it.

  • mro_o just discussing the use of them. You seem to be overreacting somewhat. I made one joke comment and then questioned another comment about them. Not exactly as though I have been ranting on about them for the last 10 pages is it?

  • Really, because it sounded like you were telling us.

  • How can I tell anyone anything, it is just a forum and I am expressing opinion. I don't need to add IMO after every thing I write do I as that would be a bit silly - IMO

  • I think bar end shifters on a tourer are dumb as well. So there .

  • Okay horatio, you don't like bar end shifters. We get it.

Sorry, I will go away now and have a talk to myself.

  • Nobody be ripping my downtube shifter off my tourer!

  • I kind of get them on a s3x bike or a tt bike that doesnt have sti's but having them and ergo brake levers on the same bike is kind of against my own philosophy of keeping the bike tidy and organized.
