• I thought it was a prerequisite for membership here.

  • Mental note? TBF that's been carved in stone for some time.

  • Random but loosely related question if I may Velocio...

I'm doing some work for a forum and happened to come across the statistic that 10% of user accounts are banned members.

How does that stack up compared to LFGSS?

  • There are 518 banned users, of which over 400 have the string "spam" somewhere in the ban reason.

I keep records of spammers who managed to actually register to help spot them and block them in future.

So depending on which way you want to cut it, and right now we have 37,609 accounts...

1.37% are banned (if you include all spammers and use the 518 banned accounts figure)

    or

0.31% are banned (if you do not include the spammers which are usually deleted from other forums and use a 518 - 400 = 118 banned accounts figure)

LFGSS, and the other forums I run are very rare in that I avoid banning people if I can do so, and so they have extraordinarily low ban rates.

Although, doing this means accepting a higher degree of trolling for longer periods of time and more disruption... but far fewer false positives.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that most of the remaining bans are nursery period bans. But even those don't happen half as much as people imagine they do. Most nursery fails I ignore... just deleting the posts involved and not banning the people, and those people go on and integrate fine.

  • Cheers for that. It's interesting stuff and well outside of my areas of knowledge.

There are ~300,000 member accounts and ~30,000 bans on this particular forum. I assume most bans will be spam related.

  • that's a big forum, what is it?

  • I'm not allowed to say Henry, definitely not publically anyway.

    What's wrong with saying Henry?

  • UK BDSM forum.

Gaia Online has 22 million members. Wow.

  • Gaia is still going? I bet it's Mumsnet.

  • I stand by the fact that salmon is vastly overrated.

  • Have you ever tried smoking it?

  • Smoke salmon, play badminton

  • What?

  • Bit unsure of forum etiquette here so thought I'd ask the question on this thread.

I've noticed users occasionally mentioning things they have for sale on the forum in threads where the subject is related to what they are selling - just wanted to check that was ok, because if so I'd quite like to mention a pair of leather cycling shoes I'm trying to sell (that don't appear to have attracted any notice) in the leather cycling shoes thread.

    Is that ok?

  • Of course.

There's sure to be some busybody who interjects, but unless Velocio or hippy take umbrage I wouldn't worry. It happens a fair bit, so you have convention on your side.
