@Pisti - there is a skewed perception of how much crime is committed by members of the black community. It's a gross generalisation which would be reinforced by the words of the OP (if not then debated). The fact that 'scruffy little white smack'eads' are perhaps the majority of catburglars is not central to this discussion, unless the OP was mentioning that the intruder was black specifically to challenge people's assumption that the he was in fact white. For the record I'm Hong Kong Chinese and moved to London only 2 years ago, so I dont think i share some of the subtle cultural references/ psychologies mentioned above. as an outsider/newcomer there is no "by default" race for me. I am aware of the "knife culture" in the city but i have no idea if stabbers are typically white, black or asian. as a cyclist i have had some unpleasant encounters both black and white drivers and pedestrians.

Concerning with why I described him *only *by skin colour besides gender, I did think about height and age, but i am especially bad in judging height, and tend to over-estimate ages of other races. So i thought it's better omit than getting them wrong. As clothing is temporary, i didnt mention that in the "story" as i did in the police report.

The vague mention of the kitchen knife in the final chapter paired with the skin colour of the assailant supposed to fill the reader - already conditioned by the previous reports in "Daily Star" - with fear and sympathy towards the author.

i do not remember what race the burglarers are in that incident. concerning the knife, it was because i grabbed a glass prepared to break it to defend myself only later realised there were some serious weapon on his way into the living room.

Sorry if i am ruining everyone's excited debate based implicitly on the white/black distinction. To conclude the description was out of limitation other than "focus" i.e. racism really. My point is that not every wording has a meaning that can and only can be interpretted by particular frameworks. The consequent "extinguisher" attitude towards (expression of) racism can easily miss the point, which doesnt help to address what conditions extreme forms of classification and its derivatives, in this case of other human beings.

I understand BMMF's professional concerns about the structure of racism that permeate the society through "racist speaks", but i seriously doubt the legitimacy of the methodology to equate particular incidents (jargon: text) i.e. mine in this case to a cultural phenomenon. IMO it risks pointless confrontation that just stir up muddy water.
