Popbitch weighing in with rumours senior ginger NOTW employees under the guise of being "Sarah's Law" crusaders actually gave out free mobiles to abuse victims to help them stay in touch with their families. Then hacked them.

With a bit of luck Coulson will squeal like a pig and spread the muck as far and wide as possible. Next stop Watergate.
Not sure how far this can really go, with the police, the press and the politicians all involved, all culpable.

Saw a piece by someone writing for Vice who did work experience at NOTW in mid-90's and was asked to join a youth club for gay teens in East London because the newsdesk decided it must be a front for nonces.
When he reported back that it was run by a lesbian couple genuinely trying to help kids in need of help he was asked whether he thought they could fit them up for something anyway.
I'm not crying for unemployed journalists at NOTW; you know what you're signing up to when you walk through the door.

That email deletion - I bet there'll be a load of shredding going on too before the liquidators get there on (presume) Monday.
Is liquidators the right word, I assume some kind of accountant would get called up to close down the business, even though it's still a going concern, and I guess they wouldn't allow any deletion / shredding once they're there.

because journalists want: controversy, misery, excitement, sex, tantrums, death, money, depravity, sensationalism etc etc to make a story.
an independent design journal is not the kind of content that the majority read in this county.
if they were truly humble they would be in a different job.no - you're wrong.
Newspapers are dying, the people who run them are desperate to sell more copies (or even just sell the same number they were last year), the owners lean on the editors and publisher, the editors want to keep their jobs, they put the squeeze on the journalists and ... ta da.. People generally don't get into journalism to become tabloid whores.
from the rapha thread, where the gem "journalism is a humble profession' was posted.

Just been on BBC news that NOTW paid a royal protection officer to steal directory of contact numbers etc. for the royal family and key staff.

Also being reported that News Corp. News International's parent company is considering selling the whole of News International in order to disassociate itself from its subsidiary. Methinks that we have only seen the tip of the iceberg in terms of corruption so far.

The next stage will be the unravelling of the email/computer hacking and particularly Jonathan Rees who basically appears to be the reason the cops did not want to go after anyone except Glen Mulcaire.
It's got the lot; Freemasonery, corrupt cops, email trojans etc.
He went to jail for trying to frame someone for cocaine posession and on release in 2004 was employed exclusively by, you guessed it, Andy Coulson for NOTW. Who knows nothing about anything of course.

if only there was a newspaper like the news of the world to bring all of this out into the open and expose the dodgy fuckers
corruption at the highest levels
profumo part deux

I literally cannot think of any other scandal that caused anything like the waves that this will go on to cause, not necessarily because I find it shocking or surprising, I don't at all, but because it will effect three huge "pillars of the establishment". Namely; Politicians (and political parties), the police and the press all will be open to huge amounts of scrutiny over the coming weeks and months, I am actually beginning to become hopeful that some good may come out of all of this shit.

I'm terrified that nothing will come of it for that reason. A few sacrificial lambs. Hope I'm wrong.

BREAKING NEWS
News Corporation "Uninterested in a deal for BSkyB that does not include Sky News".
Make of that what you will.

^^^ I think that we are thankfully, passed a point where a few sacrificial lambs will abate the public revulsion of all this.
Cameron will be giving a press conference later this afternoon, that will be interesting, as he has BIG questions to answer about hiring Coulson. I would not be suprised if he started coming under real pressure to resign if he does not give previously unheard, and very persuasive arguements as to why he gave him a job, because at the moment no one can have confidence in his judgement. If he does resign there will be a general election in months for two reasons; the first being that Clegg will be de-facto PM and has no mandate to do so, the second being that the Tories could not hold on for the next general elections after all the shit they gave Gordon Brown for doing the same.
The MET will come out of this looking very, very bad I would not be surprised if there was not a massive public consultation process as to what to do about it especially after reading the article that adoubletap linked to.
I cannot believe that the public will consider the type of tabloid journalism we have become accustomed to acceptable in the future. Additionally I think that papers will be much more tightly regulated, especially when it comes to citing sources.
Oh Yeah and I think that Murdoch will be fucked by association, this will not go down well in the states, especially with his core demographic at FOX News.
Thank god there's not some catchy Newsoftheworldgate byword for this whole thing.
