I haven't really done much recently so I'm probably a bit out of touch. Off the top of my head Drumatic is pretty good, it looks like there's a new version too. Camel crusher is great too but the free version disappeared after the company shut down, should be able to find it with some digging. Crystal synth too. I'll try and dig out some links later.

I quite like these http://www.vst4free.com/index.php?dev=Kjaerhus_Audio for basic non-DAW plugins. Otherwise I've taken to picking up freebies wherever I can.
Unfortunately there are many, many terrible free vstis out there and it takes some experimentation. I've found that paying a small amount (£5-20) tends to up the quality massively. -

TAL do great free plugins - http://tal-software.com/
check out Bedroom Producers Blog, they just gave away a really good vintage filter plugin and I use their filter freak plugin all the time - http://bedroomproducersblog.com/free-vst-plugins/

How is it?
Ms Hammer surprised me with the DRMmkii for Christmas after I decided I couldn't afford it :D
Finally got it to play nicely with my Zaquencer last night and it sounds great! Might make a video to demonstrate as most on youtube are balls. -

ace! bloody brilliant, so pleased I finally took the plunge and ordered one - my only concession to Black Friday deals - I spent about three hours going through my old productions figuring if the bottom end was OK or not compared to commercial releases - plus it's made my achy lower back feel better!
DRMmkii? Ooof, yeah def make a video - I bet that booms eh?

Free massage with every track! Interesting, my monitors are pretty decent at the bottom but it's not quite the same as a big sub adding weight. My main issue is a massive hole in the low mids due to room size.
It certainly does! I'm now slightly confused about all the reviews moaning about the kick - it's really solid.

Recorded via camera phone as I don't know if this computer can handle video editing and I can't find my virb anyway!

Fahk! Drum machine envy. I had the cash for one many years ago when analogue solutions first got them and did a good offer...spent it elsewhere, regretted it since.

Passes the iphone earbud test of sounding solid and subby without being muddy, although I thought at the beginning it was a bit wild and calmed down once the chords came in. Did you post the original up before? I had a look on your soundcloud but didn't spot it. If I still had the full PA at home I'd give it a blast but it's in storage for a while.

^ I didn't post that before, it's still a private link - it is a bit wild in places, there is a fine line using saturation, it's not always obvious how much frequency naughtiness it can add until you render it!
this is a work in progress, using another one of the acapellas I got from Notting Hill - screen flow is very hissy though, not sure why that is

hey all - just introducing myself. I'm coming from DJing (techno) in to music production via Roland Aira kit. I've booked myself on a music production course run which will be fun. If there's anyone in London who can explain what the knobs on my Roland System-1 do I'll happily buy you a pint :)

hello - is that the keyboard version or the modular? good stuff the AIRA I have the TR-8 and TB-3 and the MX-1 mixer - the TR-8 707 and 727 expansion is brilliant
-
• #796
Yep, keyboard. I'm looking forward to playing withr the SH-101 plug out. I've also got the TR-8 and the TB-3 so the MX -1 looks like the logical purchase to tie it all together. Does it have an onboard sequencer? I wasn't expecting to have to learn ableton, I was hoping for a more Maschine-like experience, maybe the MX-1 is the missing piece of the puzzle.
-
• #797
nah, no sequencer, just a mixer and FX - it's pretty easy to hook it up with Ableton though
these videos really helped me
-
• #798
hmm. Cheers.
Edit: it looks really good for my set up

Having a mixer that integrates so well (by all accounts, I have no direct experience) with the Aria stuff is probably excellent for live use - particularly if you're in places that would rather have just a stereo feed to deal with.
I know what you mean about getting away from computers/ableton but you'll probably find that for anything more complicated than the onboard aria sequencers are capable of, a standalone sequencer is as fiddly and tedious as programming ableton, just in a different way.
I've been playing with a Zaquencer to integrate some sequences into a live band sans-laptop but for all it's tactile immediacy in use, still takes forever to actually program and there's no handy visuals to see what's going on. -

if i ditch the need for a sequencer what am i missing out on with the MX-1 over ableton? A sampler? I'm about to do a course on Logic Pro X but I'm really not convinced I want a computer based workflow
the TR-8 707 and 727 expansion is brilliant
holy crap, just discovered ghost notes
