  • still waiting for the goodies to arrive btw. gah.

  • Duets are great. Very good preamp. Love my old Firewire one.

  • Was wondering about additional pre-amp stages in front of the duet and home that might work in terms of gain staging and potential additional noise? My buddy was using the LA 6A in front of a duet as his duet and getting some great natural and squashy guitar and vocal sounds.... but if the pre-amps in the duet are as good they claim, is it worth postponing outboard channel strip hardware in favour of moar mic goodness?

  • Oh god.

Someone in Helsinki has a bassbot tt-303 up for sale for 300 euros. Perfect 303 replica.

I don't need it at all.

Tell me I shouldn't buy it.

  • I also have a tube mic and Apogee soundcard, but prefer to use dedicated mic preamps before the Apogee. I use the Focusrite ISA 428 and can recommend it. If you're only going to record one thing at a time they do a single channel version...

Sorry for slow reply - I've not felt the need but I don't think it would harm things at all to use a dedicated preamp in preference/addition to the internal Duet one. Probably depends on your particular setup/gear. I just really appreciate the compactness of being able to record a mic and guitar into this one box and not have to carry much else (bar a laptop).

  • ^^ do like the lab-kit look of that Focusrite.

  • Are you recording electric guitar direct or acoustic? I've never managed to get electric feeling right (even with amp sims etc) although it's been a few years since I last tried...

    you shouldn't buy it

a friend bought one and now all he does is make Acid for hours on end

    he says its amazing

but all he does is make Acid

    for hours on end.............

  • ^^ Electric direct. But I'm usually either using it as a part of a larger arrangement (just getting little licks or riffs down), or blasting it through a Rat pedal. If I was doing very guitar-led, less effected stuff I might be tempted to mic an amp to get it right. I have (access to) a Fender Twin Reverb that sounds great, and yeah, I'm not sure I'd be able to get that sound out of virtual amps.

  • Thanks for the replies Regal/Lunch/Hammer. I'm now looking into 500 series mic pres/channel strips.

I tend to record acoustic instruments live and often with more than one mic on a source. I would mic and electric though an amp rather than use and amp sim (I do use them for rough versons of things though).

  • you shouldn't buy it

Someone beat me to it, before I even posted :(

a friend bought one and now all he does is make Acid for hours on end

This is why I want to buy one. Rebirth on my iPad and seeing Ceephax Acid Crew live has rekindled my loved of the acid.

  • My internets are broken at home meaning I can't download the Apogee software to run the duet... meaning I can't try the new mojave mic. Well, not much point in spending a grand on a valve mic them plugging it into a £100 mackie pre-amp is there? All or nothing buddy.

So it's all sat there on my desk looking pretty, mic plugged in on stand ready to go. Three days now. Thanks BT Infinity.

  • STILL no broadbands... missus is out all day tomorrow as well. Nnnnng! FUCKYOUBT! May have to lug my imac to a cafe at this rate.

HOw much of a ponce/freak woul dyou look sat in a cafe with fuck off great imac? Hehehe. I might just do it.

  • just a mixdown of a remix I'm working on (not finished, no proper ending etc for one) - would like some feedback - just Slate Virtual Channel Console on the master channel to give it a bit of oomph, not mastered yet. Wondering how I can improve the build, how I can introduce the main stab/riff - then coming out of the break, it seems to lack energy and I can't figure how to cover the last bit with just the vocal and the delay coming off that, into the extended stab riff - have a listen, see what you think cheers

  • @EB Hehe. Came close but then a friend reminded me (whilst chastising me for being utterly Ahmish) that I should just tether my iphone and use it as personal hotspot. I don't normally condone witchcraft but I did it and WE ARE LIVE!

  • ^^I couldn't begin to comment critically on the kind of music you're knocking out I'm afraid dude. Really not my area at all. *Ahmish

  • no probs, I did get some advice from a producer on Underground Music Production Facebook group which has been invaluable so working on second mixdown now

  • 6th mixdown, 3rd master - getting there - still too boxy in the mids I reckon, and the strings at the break, too toppy

  • ^ this mix is definitely clearer and more balanced but it feels like it's missing some bass, maybe? Sub bass in particular. Dunno. I'm currently in thrall to the bass on this Nu-Agenda album.

  • I've been playing with some new plugins on this WIP retro/synthwave-y thing:

    https://soundcloud.com/furoshiki/bp-004-v07-wip/s-mjz27

I threw the Waves API 2500 compressor on the master bus at the end with the "modern mastering glue" preset and just left it. I've been really impressed with it.

  • Speaking of the API 2500, it's very cheap on sale at the moment:

    http://refer.waves.com/bgr1I

$149 down from $400, plus another 10% with code 7U3W5, plus another 20% off if you buy two plugins, etc. Bargain IMO.

  • ^ cheers

yeah that mix is stil a bit boxy and lacking bass as you say

  • too late to change mix/master now though - I don't think I stand a chance of winning that remix comp I wil be up against some heavyweight producers, but a great excercise for me
