The 808 and 909 sample kits bundled with Logic (in the EXS sampler) are actually pretty good and I use them a lot. They come set up in the channel strip with compression and stuff on, but they're maybe still a bit clean out of the box. If you strip the effects back and set your own compression and sometimes a bit of overdrive on them they can sound great (though I still tend to layer a heavy bass drum underneath, e.g. I have some killer Juno 106 bass drum samples, or the DrumSpillage/MiniSpillage bass drum).
The one big benefit that samples have over the original hardware is that you can tune the drums (particularly the bass drum) to match the key you're working in.

^^ ouch.
Roland making a 'new' 808 and 303.

Hopefully they'll be proper analogue machines. Though I suspect not.
they'll no doubt be DCO's like a lot of modelled stuff

hungover and in no fit state to work on Saturday I signed up for a month's membership at Lynda.com, primarily so I could watch these Larry Crane tutorials:
http://www.lynda.com/Pro-Tools-tutorials/Music-Production-Secrets-Larry-Crane-Mixing/121905-2.html
Most of it old hat to me but worth it for several handy reminders, tips, tricks and recomendations. Plus Larry Crane's a sweet dude.
Gave me a big list of mics to check out too.

thanks for the kind offer dooks, but i'm based in manchester! cheers all, will give the logic samples a go.

DCOs would be a blessing, they are still an analogue oscillator - the Junos for a example were DCO based and think of how commonly they are used. Also people seem to love the Dave Smith instruments Tempest and that uses DCOs.
I'm expecting a fully digital thing to be honest

If you're still after monitor speakers:

anyone interested in collaborating?
i've hit a bit of a brick wall creatively and looking to work with music minded people (preferably with some instrument skillz).
i live near finsbury park and have a small set up built around a mackie 1402, juno 106 and maschine with some outboard stuff (compressor, filters etc). -

Grooves! Sorry mate, I never got back to you. How rude of me. Been head-down at work and trying to get mixes finished at the moment.
I'm getting the Adams repaired under waranty so I'm ok for now thanks man.

Tracked double bass o'dubs last night. U87 > focusrite pre > apogee duet > the bassplayer's MBP running Logic X.
Not sure about X to be honest, well not X per se, just Logic in general. The longer I use it the more I'm finding weird little limitations that get on my tits.
Why can't you destructively edit regions by rendering effects or EQ? In pro-tools you can fix a plosive by highlighting the pop, applying an eq and rendering it. In Logic you have to work around cutting and pasting and messing about with other tracks or re-routing outputs and recording new sections. Faff.
I dunno, I do really like a lot of things about it bt given that none of my nice Softube audio unit plugins will work with X anyway, I was thinking why not go Pro-Tools next time I want to upgrade?

Oh, 'old on. Apparently my softube plugins are 64 bit. Maybe I will give X a go then.

Logic X has an Audio File Editor that destructively edits the audio region source file, which is good for removing pops and stuff (in fact I think it automatically detects transients when you open it). Though I don't think you can render an effect plugin to the audio in that editor.

You can of course select any region in any channel strip (with any number of effects applied) and right-click it to select an option to export as audio. But that exports a whole region, rather than a short selection. Hm.
I know what you mean, and I'm not sure why Logic doesn't do that, exactly. Audacity does.

I got round it by cutting and pasting regions into a new track and applying a global high pass filter insert to the new track. Pretty inelegant solution though.

Lowering the tone somewhat, yesterday I bought an Alesis io4 having trawled teh internet for a few days looking at options on budget audio interface options.
Originally I was thinking irig hd/apogee jam or similar for demoing ideas on guitar with a view to getting something suitable for band recording somewhere down the line. In the end tho I just decided on the Alesis as it's cheap (£99) and has 4 xlr inputs so home recording and very basic rehearsal recordings are covered with this while I decide on something more upmarket if/when I need it.
My head really was spinning weighing up the audio interface options out there - the £/features/quality increases seem to go up in very small increments, if that makes any sense. I was all set to buy one of the entry-level Focusrite Scarletts, which seem very popular for home demoing, until I started seeing reports of them clipping quite readily with high output guitar pickups - a pretty big flaw imo seeing as they seem to be aimed largely at guitarists!

Anyone doing the ol' February Album Writing Month?
I usually give it a crack most years, get 2-3 tracks done then get distracted / busy and never finish.
This year I have decided I must complete the set!
This evening, as I couldn't be arsed going out, spent about 3 hours not having any idea what I was going to do and ended up coming up with the following nonsense which genre I shall describe as 'doom smooth jazz'
