  • I've got a Mk1, hardly use it - I find it's ok standalone, but quite hard to implement into Ableton Live successfully - it can be done, but it's a faff - if you want to record your performances into a DAW....it's a real pain

I use it mostly as a controller, but even then I'd be better off with a dedicated controller

If you fancy buying it, it has had hardly any use - boxed, with all CD's etc. - I could even let you have the couple of expansion packs I bought? £200?

  • Interesting that you dont use it much, from what ive heard from friends and read online, its very much changed their workflow. Ive always enjoyed playing with grooveboxes and often find the lack of 'hands on' feel makes drum programming on a laptop fiddly and irritating.

And that is a very very very tempting offer sir! If you really are looking to sell I may well be interested...

  • I do like the workflow in a sense, but making it work for me with Ableton, it's pretty frustrating to be honest. I should use it more as when I do I quite enjoy it, but I like the level of control I get with Live more I think

It has a couple of small scratches on the casing, but other than that it is pretty much mint

PM me if you need any more info - cheers

  • Cool, lemme sleep on it and Ill let you know

  • Yowsah. You will all be thrilled to know i'm pretty much a wizard on Garageband already. That's right . Had a couple of days off sick this week and spent them sneezing and recording. Going to keep tracking in GB for the moment (got the band coming over to add upright bass, accordion and vocals next week) but am going to get Logic Pro 9 after payday. Apparently GB projects open up in it which is pretty much awesome as there's no disincentive to keep on going in the meantime. To say I'm enjoying finally being self sufficient after all these years is an understatement... I'm fucking buzzing.

Haven't tried looping live drums yet but it's on my do to list. Will start sneaking drums into the house this weekend. "oh it's just the kick drum" etc. For all my old "demos" pre DAW i've had tons of use out of this little wonder:

Which contains thousands of awful 90s syn-drum sounding shit BUT crucially as it's a Boss/Korg/Roland thing it's got two great 808 and 909 "kits" which i've used for everything. I actually got reasonably adept at programming four of five different parts into it and switching between them while recording the output like a live performance. Hours of fun. I'm kind of tempted to carry on using it although I expect that may be unnecessarily anachronistic now i've access to 808 plug ins... after all this isn't a "real" 808.

  • I wish someone would change the title of this thread though. Gives me the willies.

  • Also any know of a good bass preamp/compressor going cheap?

One the pre-set fun wore off realised that I'm underwhelmed with the bass sounds I'm getting. I'm ready to embrace DAW thinking to a point but i'm always going to be about getting the best signal to "tape" and on reflection, that means outboard!

I want that big squashy naturally compressed bass sound that you can't replicate with plug ins.

  • just done this quickly - bit of live 'Hooky' style bass and guitar in there too - tried for that cosmic chug/nu disco thing, but as always went somewhere else

  • bought a b-stock set of these for a hunny. http://www.thomann.de/gb/esi_aktiv_05.htm

    suhweet.

next on the list, a decent all round condenser.

  • I bought one of these.

I haven't played with it much but I like it so far. IT's the only mic I have tried that a) makes my voice sound like my voice, and b) can record a nylon classical guitar accurately.

  • Sweet.

I've got an NT1-A. Had it for years. I've always found it very low noise, very neutral erring on the clinical. I hear good thing about the NT2-A though.

I've also got a cheap Stagg condenser I sometimes use for guitars and the usual 57s and 58s. I really want to get something a bit nice for vocals though. My old band used to use one of these one pretty much everything:

    also in that region is:

Must save a bit first. That's my budget for a second car.

Well. All up and runing last night. First issue is mains/static interferance through the monitors. Nothing too bad but definitely there. Going to try a ground loop isolator thing on the mac power supply and see if that helps.

Second thing is that they seem very light on bass. Now I know that the idea of near field studio monitors is to reveal nuances and deficiencies in a mix but the fact that these particular ones are also available with a subwoofer (that I don't have) is a touch worrying. I found that a warm squashy compressed jazz bass played with a soft pick that sounded great though headphones was all but inaudible though the monitors till turned way up when it became boomy and boxy. Is this a good thing? I guess I won't know until I compare a headphone mix with a mix on these and then A/B them though a few different stereos. I am concerned that certain notes on the fretboard boom out and others all but disappear. That doesn't speak to me of a completely balanced and neutral reference speaker.

    Yours,

    mildly disappointed of Forest Hill.

  • my Tannoy Reveals have a flat 'neutral' response, but bass still cuts through

think you will have to do some A/B comparison like you say

could it be they just need to bed in - can take a while for monitors to get to their best?

  • Yeah cheers. Will stick with them for now. They were only £100 and I can always sell them on and upgrade to Reveals or some nice Yamahas in a payday or two. Need to try recording some upright bass with them I think.

  • bit of a synth workout I did the other day

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgcoKQ19G8g&feature=youtu.be

  • playing now

  • mellow burn, must just be a buzz bein able to make something so spacey

  • cheers, that was a good little sesh - don't always happen like that

  • Not sure where to put this, but...

I made a couple of songs while I was on the longer train rides between cities in Japan when I was over there in May. All of the songs were written, performed and recorded using Garage Band (on an iPad) with a set of Bose noise-cancelling headphones and lack of sleep + cans of Japanese beer. I uploaded the tracks directly to SoundCloud from my iPad, so they're pretty raw. And simple. Very simple*. All the drums and synth samples are the standard ones included with Garage Band. I've never programmed drums, or really played synth either and this is the first solo thing I've ever done, plsu it's teh first thing I have ever recorded myself. I've been been playing bass for a few years in live bands and have only ever written bass lines to other instruments (synth, guitar, drums, other basses), so writing multiple instrument parts was interesting. I considered adding live bass to these tracks when I got back home, but I like the idea that it was all created using one app.

Also, I was listening to a lot (and I mean a lot) of John Carpenter soundtracks (mainly Escape From New York and Assault On Precinct 13), Zombi / Steve Moore and (Futureworld-era) Trans Am whilst on this trip. I think it shows a little bit, maybe a more party vibe though.

There are two songs at Golden Graves.

I'll be trying to write more songs soon. I have a couple in the works.

*Did I mention it's really simple? There is nothing professional about this. But I had fun doing it, so...

  • french house esque tracks i'm putting out.
made using juno 106, maschine for drums, mutronics mutator, dark energy, alesis 3630.

finally getting pressed on to vinyl ready for 19th july release.
