  • Have a listen to Jazz record requests on a Sunday.. BBC at its best.

  • Thanks. I did see that in the week-end schedule. Will give it a try for sure.

  • Some good purchases over the last week or so. The Horace Silver's are really nice Liberty pressings, which were still quite reasonably priced, in contrast to the some of the Liberty prices I've seen.

  • I've still not received my pre-ordered Makaya Mccraven 😢

  • Did you order the white vinyl? Some delays on that, apparently. My local record shop only got it in a couple of days ago.

  • Comet is Coming are touring in the UK Feb/March 2o23, I'll be at the Brum gig. Also, Pyramids on the new album is a banger, looking forward to hearing that live.

  • I got the 'sheen' vinyl.
I've had this several times though where I've pre-ordered the vinyl the day a release is announced, waited months for it to come out, and then seen it in the shops a fortnight before I get mine.
In my opinion they should make sure that pre-orders go out before the shops receive them.

  • Thanks for reminding me of the joy that is Horace Silver..

  • Who are you ordering from?

  • Maybe he gets them through a distro who gets them from the factory and the shops handle them a bit quicker than he does.

  • Yeah, artists often seem to get their own records after the main channels don't they.

  • I doubt he's shipping them himself through his bandcamp. I assume he still uses a distributor surely, the same as the supplies to shops?

  • Not sure a distributor would be sending out individual records. Mine certainly doesn't send less than 25 a time.

There are a few ways it could work though. I guess some factories might be organising individual sales deliveries (vinyl factory maybe do this) if they are offering turnkey to artists.

Traditionally an artist or label sends the masters to the factory orders a certain number and specifies where to deliver.

In the case of a label this will be a distributor who has a contract with the label. Distros then share allocations between each other to fulfill their back orders from shops/wholesalers/online sellers etc who sell to the record buying public.

In the case of an artist managing his own label he can strike up a deal with a distributor who will receive the pressings and offer them out to the wholesalers etc. or recieve the whole lot himself to post individually to customers. The latter would be the most profitable so I could see a few artists going partially that route and having a distro sell the rest.

I see this happening a bit with Bandcamp releases being sold out on the artists page but the distro is offering them on pre-release.

  • Whatever the situation is, it's really frustrating to 'pre-order' a record as soon as it's announced, but not receive it until it's already been available to Joe Public for weeks. 😢

  • The new Sam Gendel album, blueblue is out next week.

Managed to snag an early digital copy as part of my pre-order for the 100 press marbled vinyl.

It's really good. More coherent than a lot of his previous projects. If you like that whole group of people, Sam Wilkes, Jacob Mann etc, then you'll love this.

  • If you're ordering through Bandcamp you are likely ordering from the least likely place to deliver first. So save yourself some frustration and order from a big online seller. I'm sure Juno will be one of the most likely to deliver on time.

  • Couple of artists I buy from fairly regularly on BC are definitely sending stuff out from their living room!

  • For some reason I always 'felt' like I was supporting an artist more by buying directly from their bandcamp, but I guess it doesn't really make much difference in the grand scheme of things. 🤷

  • Btw... I can't remember now, but was it you I spoke to before about a custom DJ booth setup? 🤔
I can't remember if you said you do them or if I'm getting confused in my old age?

  • I brought a couple of International Anthem releases from Bandcamp, and they took an age to get to me. They used to press in the USA, and in Europe, and they'd send from whichever region you lived in, I think they sent from !K7 previously for European purchases? Not sure what the arrangement is now they've got the deal with XL.

  • You are supporting them but you're also getting frustrated by them!

  • I have made a custom DJ setup for myself but I've not done them professionally. When I say booth, mine is a tripod with a usb mixer and laptop on it. It's survived a few gigs now so I guess it works.

  • I think most of the ones I'm getting delays on are International Anthem too.

  • Didn't end up getting a ticket for Lady Blackbird / Doomcannon after all - however I've just learnt that Doomcannon is playing a show here in Portsmouth in a couple of weeks, so that's a nice consolation!
