  • thats utterly stupid...

    Or utterly 'artistic'.

  • The only thing i know you have done today is be a prick to someone you don't know on the internet.

In the same 24h period, he was also nice to somebody he doesn't know on the internet. Just so you can get a balanced view of the man.

  • Still 100 nuggets for the clips iz bare jokes.

There's about £1.50 worth of gold there, based on a 3μm thickness. My local plater has a minimum process charge of £60, so the process cost swamps the material and it would be essentially the same price for nickel or chrome plate. That's for a professional service under an ISO 9001 Quality Management System.

I reckon £50 would be a fair price to gold plate a pair of toe clips if he's looking to offer a service out of his shed. Those knackered clips are obviously worth less than that, since anybody who wants bling isn't going to want scratches.

  • i don't know what to make of all this,

do you charge £33 an hour or is the rest material cost, if there is a large material cost gold plating scuffed clips does seem silly?

not even a million squillionaire would by a diamond encrusted iphone case with one diamond missing

if it was for art (fart) you should have gold plated a shit and polished it, put it in a gallery and called it 'you CAN polish a turd'

  • ^ posted at the same time as tester. some cross questioning going on there.

    That's MDCC_tester to you :-)

  • Who's bidding or offering?

  • As mentioned before. They were never ment to have sold. I work with daily with croming/nickeling/elox etc and got a couple of clips of a guy whos fork we did. Just thought it would be a laught having some gold clips on my bike. Of course i wouldnt sell smashed clips to a retailer or to some showroom, the point was just to illustrate that some people like shiny things.

And tester, 3my is just a standard. this was a 9my covering :)

The price was set quite high i agree. Will have that in mind next time around.

  • How about a glitter rolling service, then possibly a lacquer?

  • This thread is pure gold

  • 'you CAN polish a turd'

    mythbusters proved it

OK, so there's £5 worth of gold there rather than £1.50. My point stands.

  • I love how this whole thread got dumped into anti-porn

  • wow, what a fine specimen!

  • Why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why didn't you do this with brand new clips instead of scratched ones?

    Cunthardy.

  • From what I can figure the OP has taken some used clips along to see how it goes, then come here to get feedback on whether its a viable business opportunity.

My 2cents would be, yes, people will probably pay, but not £100+ for it. I know decent clips cost a fair amount, but ultimately its going to be the fashion mob who want these, and frankly, they don't care for quality so you could use a lower quality new clip, do a decent thickness (right term?) of gold on them for longevity and I would aim for the hipster wallet (do they actually use wallets, or are they too mainstream?) friendly amount, say £40-60 all in delivered.
Obviously your going to have to do a variety of sizes, first batch go for 10-20pairs and see how it goes.
Good luck with it, but don't expect to be able to shift a used pair of clips for more than double that.

  • Thank you Brickman for the info. Ill see to it that the next pair will be much much much lower in price. The most common thing actually is to chrome bikeparts which seems to much easier to set a price on.

  • Well done kid24 on not rising to any of the seriously ott criticism on this thread. Your sense is a credit to you.
