If not paying attention to what you are doing results in someones death then that's clearly a bad thing, but in the (entirely theoretical) case of "death by dooring" I reckon the driver of the car would get off without any real sanction.
Guy I know in Melbourne had his mate killed due to dooring.
The guy in the car got 2 years jail. -

So ride at 5mph.
"We were riding, as estimated by the attending Police and subsequent
coroner's inquest, at between 15/20kph.
The car door was opened. Andy had nowhere to go as a car was straddling
both lanes to his right. The top corner of the door went straight thru
his helmet and skull. According to the coroner if the timing were right
this could be achieved at just above typical walking pace (ave 3-8kph)." -

My point is that whichever side you are filtering on you have to slow down because that gives you more time to react.
-
• #30
Totally correct. I can't think of any situation cycling where you have less time to react.
Hippy, that's shocking. I've only previously heard of fatalities between motorbikes and opened doors.

Unfortunately there was an elderly man killed in Hampstead last year having been hit by a car door.

With all due respect to anyone that has been or knows someone who has been injured or killed due to a dooring incident, I have never heard about one that was unavoidable.
Just saying.

Bullshit.
Single lane, oncoming traffic. Do you wait behind every parked car, eh?
Passing car door intentionally flung open to knock down rider?
The death mentioned above happened on a road with parking on both sides and tram tracks along it in the middle. They don't leave a lot of room for great road position.

I'm sure it happens, just that in my experience, the people that whinge about nearly having been hit have always put themselves in that position.
Maybe it's coz I live in a quieter city than London, I dunno.

I ride wide to avoid dooring. There's times when it's not possible to do this.
Swerving to avoid ped walking through traffic at the same time a car to your left swings a door.. which do you aim for?
-
• #36
Ped (softer).
Does that make me a bad person?
-
• #37
What about the door opener? They are also soft.

The hand or the handle? -

I also do this, very consciously. Maybe it's because i am so conscious about it that makes me notice when people are putting themselves in the door zone.
I'd aim probably aim for the ped, unless they seemed less likely to be able to brush off a hit than the door opener.

^^^ so many fat jokes... far too easy

The only two times (once a flip and the other a slight clip) I've been doored it's because somebody has decided to overtake me and force me to move left.
-
• #42
Definitely ride into them.
-
• #43
Them being the door or the lorry/rubbish/big fuck off thing?
-
• #44
Yes. When they're not looking.
Just read the article.
Would have got less because of the indirectness of the injuries. Died from hitting the ground because of the punch, not just the punch.
Either way, he's a scumbag.
