An emotional meeting tonight, very moving at times. It seemed to take about twelve people to take on Barry's work. Well-chaired, Alex.

Thanks for coming Oliver, great to have you there. Indeed, it's a daunting task to pick up where he left off but he wouldn't want us wasting time deciding how to do things - he'd want us to go ahead and DO them!

Congratulations on taking up the mantle. I'm sure it's a daunting task but have no doubt that you'll be able to meet the challenge well and will be supported fully by the group.

Thank you so much. If I can do a fifth of what Barry did, I will be happy.
I have a great team to work with...and it's growing. -

Bump for anyone who hasn't seen this yet. Barry's funeral is today at 2:30.

It's the first anniversary of Barry's passing this weekend. How time flies. Still think of him and miss him every single day.
-
• #64
Good bumb missmouse
I often think of him too. -
• #65
I didn't have his actual death day on my radar, but I do now. Thanks, Alex.
I think I heard the news one or two days later and was numb with shock.
-
• #66
I think we all were, in some ways some of us still are.
I still find myself half-expecting him to call or show up at meetings. I often want to ask him a quick question about how to deal with an issue or a DunRun query etc. etc. And his brusque voice remains so vivid.
Some things just seem so unfair.

I try to think that it was just unfair on everyone else who didn't get to meet him. Best not to ask What Would Barry Do?, just what would Barry like me to do?
I was thinking about his passion for the Millenium Mills the other day (frequently mentioned on Afterworkers to the Woolwich Ferry) so might have a tour of old flours mill in memory.

For anyone who would like to help commemmorate Barry and his tireless work:
The South Bermondsey Partnership has commissioned a portrait bench in honour of the late Barry Mason who many of us still remember with great fondness and admiration.
The bench which also features two lesser luminaries - Phyllis Pearsall (of A to Z fame) and some actor or other by the name of Caine - is due to be unveiled on Friday, 16/8/13, at 10.30. The ceremony will also formally inaugurate a section of Sustrans Connect 2 from Burgess Park to Greenland Dock which includes the new bridge.
There will be a ride of Lewisham and Greenwich cyclists from Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich to Brunswick Quay, Greenland Dock via the Thames Path with a view to arriving a little after 10.00. Southwark Cyclists are running a ride along the new Connect 2 section from Burgess Park to the quay for the event.
From one of the organisers:
Not wishing to be late I suggest we assemble at CSG from 9.30 onwards for departure around 9.45.There’s some sort of ‘Family Fun’ activities afterwards including a Dr Bike (see sustrans.org.uk/events/pedal-uk-south-bermondsey ) but as alternative we could visit the new bridge or, better yet, visit Barry’s old stomping ground – Surrey Docks Farm - for well-earned refreshments and perhaps an early lunch. -

This Friday I'm leading a Southwark Cyclists ride from Burgess Park to the unveiling of this ^ new portrait bench that honours several Southwark figures, including Michael Caine and Barry Mason: http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/events/ride-unveiling-portrait-bench-greenland-dock
Come if you can - lots of fun activities promised too.

Thanks for these photos Charlie. Was good to see you today.
Despite the drizzle it was a lovely ride through the park via the new BMX track, and a really moving occasion at the Dock (despite the unveiling doubling up as a celebrity/clown 2012 legacy photo op - I declined the Michael Caine face mask).
Barry would have grumbled and laughed, I should think.

Unbelievable that it'll be the third anniversary of Barry's death soon. I've been thinking a lot about him recently.

We were talking about him at CTUK the other day. We had an issue about finding a location for something in Southwalk and thought that Barry would have been the person to come up with a solution.
Lovely to read the messages above.
Just to remind you, tomorrow's SC monthly meeting will be going ahead as planned. It starts at 6.30pm @
