Did you see the memo from the guy, asking users to track down the culprits. Nasty business.

I hold so few bitcoins and carry so little sway in the market that I very much doubt I could make it work, even if it didn't outrage everything I stand for as a journalist.
I just genuinely find crypto-currencies fascinating and bloody good fun to write about. Such a genuinely new, exciting phenomenon with real capacity to change things.

Is the BBC explanation of bitcoin deliberately obtuse? How the f--k are you supposed to understand it without any mention to the shared public ledger?

does anyone understand bitcoin... really?

The developers. You need a strong background in comp sci to fully get it.

The mysterious mulitmillionaire anonymous developers...
Think my background checksout and ive no idea how it works.Anyone who talks as if they know exactly what's going to happen with bitcoin is wrong. Plain and simple. It's a fun experiment and I'm enjoying watching it.
-

They're not anonymous. You can find them all on github. If you've read the code and you don't understand how it works then you don't have the right background.
I doubt there are many people who understand every little intricacy. But plenty of people understand the basics. Having said that, there's an awful lot of misinformation around. That's not likely to change; the average man in the street doesn't know how banks work, for example.

I'm not getting into bitcoin, the code is way too simplistic.

Yes. You might be able to buy from gox but you wont be able to withdraw your coins.

The anonymous online marketplace Silk Road 2 says it has been hacked resulting in the loss of all its customers' bitcoins.
An administrator for the site said hackers had manipulated computer code enabling them to withdraw $2.7m (£1.6m) worth of the virtual currency.
Seems convenient ?

local bitcoin are selling around the £360 mark at the moment.
Price has fallen further since Sparky's attempts to calm the market.
