Nice. I'd go bar end personally. I love the way they give a very satisfying click and are very easily reachable.

That's my feeling too, especially on the towpath, and the ability to run friction as well as indexed (dowbtube shifted is only friction)

Eh? You can get indexed DT shifters too.

You can get DT shifters where you can switch the mode.
It is, I build this one first, loved it, the drivetrain is perfect (11-28 8 speeds paired with 44t TA cranks), feel really smooth as if it's a singlespeed;
moved all the part from that bike to the new one, received free Froggleg brakes with Koolstop pads a while ago and was given a good headset for free (Cane Creek 40), so only have to spend some monies on the frame.
I'm waiting for a 46/30 cranks to complete it, give me enough gear range to not required a triple yet keep the q-factor narrow (like the TA cranks, waiting for a white industries road crankset), still undecided for a downtube shifter or bar end.
