A truncheon proof gas mask?
Are you advocating helmet wearing?
Bikeradar>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I was assuming they would try and gas you first... then you could avoid getting truncheoned?!
Or... you could just ride in the middle of the road.
I'm not wearing a hard hat yet.

I guess I was hoping that a city full of speed bumps would put off people driving who would then switch to cycling or walking or whatever, but that's probably slightly unrealistic...unfortunately!
A city full of speedbumps results in everyone buying 4x4s for the ground clearance. As has already happened.
Back in the 80s people in London mostly drove Minis, Metros and Fiestas.
-
• #154
hehe. They didn't buy SUVs because of speed bumps.
They bought bigger cars because driving is scarier.
-
• #155
I'm afraid that Niall is correct- the majority of 4X4's are found in cities because we made the urban environment unsuited to the "standard" family car.
4X4's don't have to slow down for speedbumps, can mount high curbs easily, and have a "commanding" driving position allowing you to see over the traffic, so you can work out if a U-turn and re-route makes sense. They are also safer in a crash- for the occupants, it's bad news for whatever they hit.
Transit vans (and their ilk) offer similar advantages.
-
• #156
But it's psychological, rather than practical.
They can't actually make those u-turns.
-
• #157
Yes they can- they can drive up and over the curb/other smaller cars without slowing.
-
• #158
speed bump - bicycles.
we're already a traffic calming measurement.

I expect better from you;-)
By 4x4's you mean x5's etc, they won't go off road even if the owner wanted them to, curbsand parking in flower beds in the local hospital car park do not count as off road.
They do have to slow for speed bumps as their expensive alloys will split if they don't.
I'll give you the driving position, however they miss everything they should be seeing as they are talking on an iThing.
They are all truly shit if involved in an accident. -

Niall and Neil are correct--vertical deflection (always glad to weave in a bit of jargon) has definitely had an effect not only on people buying large off-road vehicles, but also on the suspension of the average car. There are better ways of discouraging fast through traffic, such as filtered permeability.

Oliver is correct
the increase in road bumps has caused london black cabs to change their suspension every year as apposed to every 4 years over the past 5 years(ish)
the cost of road humps is astranomical given its just a hump -

World at One, on Radio 4, has just highlighted a forthcoming item: who's to blame for Cycling deaths, Lycra Louts or White Van Man?

Leadsom again claimed Rhiannon was on the pavement. She must know this is untrue, and nobody challenged her.

plus it will take away some of the benefit of mpv's so over time fewer people will have mpv's.
and less mpv's = less crashes and road death.
Please explain, Phil.
Owning an MPV doesn't make me a mass murderer.
What I'd like to see personally (and what affects me) is removing cyclists from pavements first. Especially around the estates where the whole width of the pavement is taken by the hands free MTB brigades on their mobiles.

By the way, I've been driving for 24 years now and have never killed anyone.
I've had only two crashes - once a mini cab drove into me and the second time a woman in 4x4 reversed into me.
Ok, and once when driving a company van a bus drove into me in Catford. Not my fault. -
• #172
And from the Evening Standard. Cyclists have had an easy ride.
The best bit:
Do not be misled by the propaganda. Bicycling is as hazardous as the man or woman behind the wheel. I know. The last time I rode a bicycle I collided with a traffic light. -

why mpv? mpv are an idea vehicles for a large family, smaller than a van, but bigger than a saloon, high driving position but not as high as an SUV, foldable seat mean you can used it for just about everything.
did you confused mpv with suv?
-
• #174
SUV? It will be my next car. The state of roads where I go for holidays doesn't warrant any other family vehicle and I'm not cycling two thousands miles with a 3 years old child. Problem?
