  • If he was in a car he would have lost his license years ago. Clearly bikes should have registration plates #definitelyanextemelygoodidea

  • I watched back a headcam video of me shouting at a cunt last night and wondered if it was playing 50fps at 60fps or something to explain why my voice sounded so high pitched.

It turns out that's how I sound when I'm angry. Like the "get in the back of the van!" policeman from Whithnail & I.

Going to have to make a concerted effort to sound more manly when in a state of panic in the future. In the mean time, pitch shifting.

  • Dub over the video with some Enya.

  • Key their doors.

Actually I think you're supposed to really badly beat one of them on the first day to set an example to the others.

  • I do this too. That's if I can manage any kind of coherent speech. Even if I have a chance to think about what I'm going to say it comes out an octave higher than I had rehearsed in my head.

    :)

  • That I'm a 6'2" 100kg bearded Northern Irishman probably makes it all the more confusing for the recipient

  • I'm picturing the opposite of that video of the bloke dressed as a woman who's getting abused by a couple of guys and suddenly switches from high pitch lady-like voice to "you fucking what you cunt?" In a deep manly voice.

  • ^^ Awesome reaction!

  • That press release is out of date:

    https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/media/press-releases/2015/march/tfl-outlines-new-sites-for-potential-20mph-speed-limits

I assume that the pilot is either about to be made permanent or has just been made permanent. I don't read the Islington Gazette regularly, so may have missed a traffic order.

No idea if there are plans to extend it north of the Seven Sisters Road junction.

  • I have come to the conclusion that the average motorist is physically incapable of driving at this speed

Driver behaviour is obviously the main problem, but I've also been told that car gearing isn't set up to have a convenient gear for 20mph. This may be nonsense, but as a non-driver I wouldn't have the foggiest if it's true or not.

  • Ouch. Heal up soon.

  • Seven Sisters Rd still isn't a 20 zone due to it being a TFL road.

  • TfL have long-term plans to extend 20mph to much of their network. It's moving at a glacial pace, though (no 20mph jokes, please). I'm pretty sure that SSR is somewhere in the pipeline, too.

  • Rule of thumb: has it got red parking restriction lines instead of yellow? If Yes = TfL road.

  • Yes, that's a completely outdated design. It makes it quite hard to turn into the cut-throughs, too. That junction perhaps had a sump breaker at first and may later have been changed to the smoother, bollarded design. It's very similar to the one at New North Road/Arlington Avenue.

  • Sorry to hear about that. Out of interest, where was it?

    Heal up soon!

(You could also post here: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/211259/ )

  • I've been told the same. My partner says my 2005 fabia is set up really badly for driving comfortably at low speeds but more modern cars are more capable.

The problem as far as I can tell is that driving below 20mph in second gear makes the engine sound a bit whizzy. Changing to third whilst remaining below 20mph the engine sounds like it's struggling / might stall unless you speed up a bit.

  • There's probably some truth to it because cars tend to be a bit peaky in 1st and 2nd so drivers with poor throttle control (LOL... ie. everyone) are likely find it harder to sit at 20 compared to say 40. "Oh, it's a bit annoying to hold my foot still here" is a pretty shit reason though.

  • Didn't the met make a formal announcement a while back saying they wouldn't enforce 20mph speed limits?

  • Not sure what SSR is but most of the drivers I encounter could probably benefit from SSRI's

  • 'Seven Sisters Road'

  • Generally speaking yeah, TfL's red routes and the local councils yellow lines. TfL have also taken control of a handful of junctions traffic lights on top of that as they feel they are strategic and can impact the traffic so much it's worth incorporating them into the systems they have which can speed up/slow down the rate of drivers. In some areas cycle routes will also be blue for TfL backed/funded cycle super highways while council maintained ones will be green or sometimes red.
