  • Opencyclemap is surprisingly up to date.

You could give this a try, coming from Homerton Road. It hugs the river for a bit, going under the cycle track bridges, then loop back to the Velodrome.

It's not too difficult to access - next to a big wooden farm gate directly opposite the junction of Homerton Road. I don't think it's been open long.

Just went down there now and those other access points to the North you mentioned on the other side of the Lea are still shut (16th April)

  • found a new entrance on the canalside yesterday just north of the old carpenters road leading down to the copperbox area

The 'Pay and Ride' Sessions. How much are they?

    Edit: £6

  • So safe routes to the Velo park from the Hackney & TH for riders for our Tuesday Ten series, starting 13th May, would be much appreciated

    Hi Peter

This might help, coming from Victoria Park

  • Does anyone know when they're going to start running crit races on that circuit?

  • Not sure, LVA are looking to local clubs to promote races. We, LV CC will be running our TT series there from the 13th May. So far there are mixed views on the suitablity of the road circuit for racing. Hackney CC may be doing some thing...

  • What are the problems re racing? Too tight? Too 'tricky'? Not enough vantage points? Poor team zones?

  • i guess they just don't want it flooded with outsiders
taking up valuable time on the circuit at the busiest times

  • Outsiders?

  • i was thinking about non local clubs ( outsiders ) but i think i may have misread the posts above
    sorry

I've ridden the circuit a week ago and there's nothing tricky about it - you can ride flatout most it, if not all.

  • Was it fun? Thought about continuing my rehabilitation by taking a go at it. Are you time limited once you've paid or can you go round and round and round and round and round....?

Just be aware the maps and satellite images of the Olympic Park on google maps are a bit out of date, they don't show all of the road tweaks and pedestrian through-ways put in over the past year.

  • Went to the 'pay and ride' session on Sat. There were a couple of guys doing laps and a few parents with their young kids, but pretty empty really.

The session goes from 4 - 9pm and you can ride as much as you like. Sounds crazy, but could do with a few more people as I got a bit bored going round an empty 1 mile course for an hour. Will head back in a couple of weeks and see what it's like.

  • Can someone post the twowheelsgood blogpost with all the photos on that im bleating on about in campaign ing thread?

Just a shame they didn't plan these lanes a little better before actually putting them down in the first place. Unfortunately they have made no improvements to Westfield Avenue, the dual carriageway which leads to the 5,000+ capacity car park in the Westfield shopping Centre and runs alongside the Olympic Park. This was also the main entrance to the Olympic Park back in 2012 and is still the main entrance most people use coming from Stratford station to the newly opened South Park and the Aquatics centre. Last year I described how it was a bit of a pain to constantly give way to pedestrian crossings and bus shelters. Whilst still being a pain I would say it is now actually quite dangerous indeed. Back then the southern section of the Olympic Park was still all locked away and not a single bus went down this road so pedestrian footfall was very low indeed. However it is now served by two bus routes and people often wait for buses after shopping at Westfield

  • Thankyou spindrift

  • I think one of the major issues in this area is for cars, buses, vans etc, coming towards Hackney Wick from this road. They are travelling, say 30mph, then hitting the bridge over the canal, where they suddenly encounter pedestrians and cyclists coming off, and going onto, the canal. Due to congestion on busy days, these pedestrians and cyclists will often be in the road

  • The road layout was more or less dictated by Westfield, they should be asked questions about the ludicrous dog's breakfast they've made of the park roads.

  • It wasn't just Westfield, the whole traffic aspect of the redevelopment of the Stratford Rail Lands and the area south of there was a badly co-ordinated shambles all along, largely planned by out-of-towners who didn't have a clue about London and whose brief was very heavily motor traffic-dominated. The Olympics was a completely lost cause to campaign on, and it'll take decades to get their rubbish right. Lots of different 'authorities', political changes, etc. God only knows what will be next for this ridiculous nonsense of a saga.

I probably need an update on this, but Newham apparently have an extremely long snagging list and are very far from adopting many of the roads there. I heard recently that the part of the former 'loop road' that goes past the Velopark is now an LVRPA road.

  • I walked through the park today . The southern part near Westfield was busy with families and there was a good feeling about the place, but it's still a park next to a shopping centre with a main road to cross to enter it. It reminds me of Hyde Park, but Hyde Park is easier to get into

The Northern end near the Velopark is sort of open though there are still lots of fences which ineffectually block entry.

What does look interesting is that old Carpenters Road route is still there in place. So it's possible that a new East - West route to cross the Lea/ Lee could be found that would reduce the need to cross @ the Bow Flyover.

  • If the Northern side was fully open you could have a traffic free route down to the Stadium from Walthamstown Marshes. It just needs lighting and signposting.

  • What are the problems re racing? Too tight? Too 'tricky'? Not enough vantage points? Poor team zones?

Entry to the circuit is like entering a prison . Team zones are an after thought . No idea where the vantage points are other than from the balcony of the Velodrome.

Clubs need to work out how to make it work....
